My dog has large, growing bumps on his rump. Is it an emergency?

Oh that is quite a large bump! I'm wondering if it could be a cyst, or if her anal sac is impacted. Because it's that large and I'm concerned it could rupture, I would have Frida seen by a vet immediately. Best of luck.

Daisy sure is cute!! So sorry she is having this issue. That looks like an open wound that is oozing. The lump could be an abscess or cyst that has ruptured. I would not consider this an emergency but I would try to take her in for an exam during your vet's regular business hours. It is very hard for me to tell much without seeing her in person. The symptoms do not sound life threatening. If the wounds are not full thickness and do not appear to be bleeding, you clean the area with peroxide and wait until Monday. If you notice bleeding, swelling or discharge, I would advise you to take him to an emergency veterinary hospital.

If there is no improvement or in the meantime this appears to be getting worse, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. This does not appear to be an emergency. Hello and thank you very much for your question. Fleas can be so frustrating and I sympathize with what you were going through. What has to happen for your dog to heal and for the lump to possibly go down, Is for the itch cycle and the inflammation to be stopped. A visit to the local veterinarian is a must in this situation because they will have strong prescription strength flea preventative as well as steroids that can be given to your dog to stop the fleas and therefore the dermatitis that’s associated with their biting. I urge you not to use any further over-the-counter flea preventative or skin medications without the approval from your veterinarian. This will only delay the healing and may exacerbate the problem. The lump should go down with time as long as the fleas are killed and the inflammation of the skin is controlled. But, if the lamp does not go away within the next two months, you may want to have your veterinarian take a biopsy of it just to see if it is indeed even related to the fleas. Does that make sense? From the picture, it looks as though Ruby may have some pustules on her abdomen. These most commonly occur as a sign of a bacterial skin infection, which could occur secondary to excessive licking or chewing, allergies (although this would be highly unusual in such a young pup), or other issues. I do recommend taking Ruby to her vet for an exam, but this is not an emergency that necessarily needs to be treated this weekend. I hope this helps and that all goes well for Ruby!

Poor cash! This could be a mass or an infection. If he is eating, drinking, doesn’t seem painful and acting normally, then I wouldn’t consider this an emergency. BUT I would try to get him into the vet as soon as you are able. If it is infection, then if could quickly get worse and he could become ill. Your vet will be able to aspirate some cells from the swelling and look at it under the microscope to tell you that what it is. Your vet will be able to provide him with some antibiotics or anti-inflammatories if needed. If it is a mass, your vet will be able to recommend whether or not it needs to be removed.
