Dog got subcutaneous fluids for dehydration, now has fever & pain?

IV fluids are definitely recommended for a young puppy who is vomiting and is having diarrhea because it's the best way to keep them from getting dehydrated. Getting an IV catheter put in is not very painful at all, and once the needle is in the vein, giving the fluids is painless. This is the best option for keeping dehydration at bay. Dora could be subcutaneous fluids (fluids infected under the skin), but that involves a needle as well and it does not rehydrate the dog as quickly as IV fluids. I highly recommend letting the vet give her IV fluids.

Repeated fluid therapy under the skin will often produce quite extensive oedema such as you describe and this can become infected so should be monitored closely; this is why intravenous fluids are generally used for correcting significant dehydration

There are many causes of dehydration and given her symptoms, I would recommend having her blood tested to rule out kidney disease or any other systemic diseases / infections. She will likely need a course of subcutaneous fluids, which is when fluid is administered under the skin and absorbed by the body. This is an effective way to hydrate an animal and is well tolerated. That shouldn't hurt anything at all - in fact, 400 mL is within the range that I would normally give to a 30 pound dog at one time if needed :) She should urinate out any excess fluid without a problem. Just check to make sure that it's all (or mostly) been absorbed before you give her next scheduled dose of fluids, since it can be uncomfortable for her to have large amounts of fluid just sitting under her skin for long periods of time - if you need to, you can delay it by a few hours until the "bubble" is mostly gone.

Dehydration isn’t usually painful. It makes dogs lethargic and they don’t want to eat or drink. If he’s in hat much pain I’d be concerned about an injury, pancreatitis or an intestinal obstruction. You are correct that he’s also at risk of dehydration if he’s not eating or drinking normally. I recommend a veterinary exam soon so he can recover quickly. Sometimes the skin and the subcutaneous space where the fluid was put can get sore, especially if there was a lot of fluid pressure. This should go away after a day or two. Next time Jack needs subcutaneous fluids ask the vet to divide the fluid up into two separate places, it might help keep it from being sore afterwards.

Hello. Wheezing is neither a symptom of the HG, nor from the subcutaneous fluids. Fluids can sometimes overwhelm the lungs, but this generally occurs when fluids are administered IV, too fast or in overwhelming amounts. If the wheezing continues, worsens or his breathing rate is greater than 60 breaths per minute ( not panting ), you should return to your vet for further evaluation & treatment.
