I gave my 30lb dog too much sub-Q fluids for parvo. Is she okay?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding the puppies. I'm sorry to hear that they have parvo. I believe you are referring to subcutaneous fluids. These are fluids that are given under the skin as opposed to intravenously. This allows it to be done out of the hospital. The fluids help to keep the puppies hydrated in the face of ongoing fluid losses through continued vomit and diarrhea. Your veterinarian will need to provide the fluid bags, supplies and instruction on how to administer the fluid as well as appropriate doses for each pup. Just have water available for her to drink if she wants it. She may not be interested in drinking because you are giving the SQ fluids. The biggest thing that seems to help recovery in parvo cases is to get them eating as soon as possible. So, if you can try feeding her some canned puppy food that would be best. The chicken is OK but it does not have all the nutrients and vitamins needed to help her recover quickly. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

This happens when fluid leaks from the vessels beneath the skin. This happens sometimes when fluid is given for multiple days in cases where they lose a lot of protein (common with parvo), or if fluid was given under the skin (they do this sometimes before sending home). The fluid should eventually be absorbed in the next 3-5 days. If not, then it's best to notify your vet. I hope that helps and all is well with Charlie.

No, do not stop her from drinking water, but instead of leaving full bowls of water out, try offering her just a few tablespoons of water every hour. If she starts being able to keep this down, you can gradually increase the amount that you're offering. The fact that she's still so thirsty may indicate that she's still quite dehydrated, despite the fluids under the skin. If you're unable to hospitalize her for IV fluids, you may want to ask your vet if they think she should be receiving a larger volume of the subcutaneous fluids under the skin. The vet gave her Autumn just under shock rates of fluid therapy, which would make sense if she was very dehydrated. The fluid give subcutaneously would mean it was absorbed slower over time. This isn't too much fluid, especially if she was very dehydrated. It sounds like the fluids helped, but now she is quick sick again. She should go back to the vet immediately, I would take her in now. best of luck.

If a dog has heart problems and is unable to utilize the volume of fluids that is given, those fluids can end up in the lungs and cause an increase in breathing. This is most common with large amounts of fluids given IV quickly, but can occur with SubQ fluids. However, it takes time to develop, so it would have occured a number of hours after fluids were given - not immediately after. And when Memi was hospitalized, the IV fluids should have made her worse, not better. The most likely explanation is that the breathing was due to her kidney disease, and the fluids were coincidentally given at the same time. Giving enough fluids (IV or SubQ) is very important to making a kidney failure patient feel good, so continuing her SubQ fuids is important. Good luck! I hope that answered your question. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Buddy. It sound like he recieved subcutaneous fluids. These are fluids given under the skin to help rehydrate a dog. Gravity can pull the fluids to different areas. They can shift after he has been laying down or sleeping as well. They should absorb naturally over the next 24 hours. If Buddy is acting normal, then you shouldn't have to worry. I hope this information helps!
