Why is my puppy swollen on chest/legs after IV fluids for dehydration?

Hello, so sorry that Fifa is having this issue. It is very difficult to comment without seeing her leg. I suspect she has cellulitis. Probably some of the IV fluids and/or medications went around the catheter and into the surrounding tissues causing inflammation. It is not typically an emergency but I suggest you call the hospital she was at, or your regular vet, to get her seen for treatment of this problem as soon as you can. Typically oral antibiotics and anti-inflammatories are needed to help correct this. In the meantime you can do some cold water therapy on the leg for 10 minutes 2-3 times per day. This entails using a hose with a firm spray (and cold water) on the leg - move the water up/down the leg for the entire 10 minutes. Use as hard of a spray as she will allow. Hope this helps. IV fluids are definitely recommended for a young puppy who is vomiting and is having diarrhea because it's the best way to keep them from getting dehydrated. Getting an IV catheter put in is not very painful at all, and once the needle is in the vein, giving the fluids is painless. This is the best option for keeping dehydration at bay. Dora could be subcutaneous fluids (fluids infected under the skin), but that involves a needle as well and it does not rehydrate the dog as quickly as IV fluids. I highly recommend letting the vet give her IV fluids.

The vet gave her Autumn just under shock rates of fluid therapy, which would make sense if she was very dehydrated. The fluid give subcutaneously would mean it was absorbed slower over time. This isn't too much fluid, especially if she was very dehydrated. It sounds like the fluids helped, but now she is quick sick again. She should go back to the vet immediately, I would take her in now. best of luck.

Hello, sorry to hear about Prince. It sounds like he may have right sided heart disease in which the blood backs up into his veins and the vascular fluid begins to leak out of the vessels. This generally leads to fluid in the belly causing abdominal distention, fluid in the chest, and subcutaneous fluid. Other causes of 3rd spacing can be associated with a low protein level either due to liver disease or loss of protein through the kidneys or bowel. It sounds like prince needs to have a full evaluation of his vital organs and this may include bloodwork, an abdominal ultrasound, a heart ultrasound, and blood pressure monitoring. Ultimately, Prince may need to be evaluated by his veterinarian or an internist to determine why he is having fluid accumulation outside of his vasculature. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Other causes of altered respiration include abdominal pain, fever, medications that were administered to Babbi. If his breathing remains abnormal for the next 1-2hrs minutes you should get in touch with your local vets as Babbi may need to be seen and assess again by a vet today.

Your Hoot will likely need a course of antibiotics and/or anti-inflammatory agent to get better. Please, keep her rested overnight and apply a cold compress on the leg (ice cubes wrapped up in a towel) for 10-15 minutes every 2-3hrs to help with the swelling.

If he received a lot of IV fluids then it may be him passing the excess. This can also be a side effect of any steroids if he received that while getting treatment. It may be a sign if something else going on such as a kidney, bladder or blood sugar problem. It if continues then it is best to have him rechecked to see what is changing
