My dog's stye keeps reopening. When should I take her to the vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 9 lbs

Hi ! My partners dog had a stye on her 3 weeks ago, she proceeded to then scratch it open.. it then healed she has then scratched it again right before it healed. She scratched it again 2 days ago so we got her a poet rive collar... her eye is quite puffy today. I was wonderingly if I should take her in to the vets or it will just heal on its own... thanks for your help...

As your dog keeps scratching it open , even after it heals you should take De de to the vet for an exam of the lesion. It may be caused by a tumor that is irritating or itching and may need to be removed. If she keeps scratching it open she will possibly injure her eye as well and therefore compromise her eye sight. Best make an appointment soon.
