My dog has an eye bump and is rubbing it. What can I do until the vet?

Lesions like this can be a few things including a skin tumor, an ingrown hair, an infection or a blocked pore. You may monitor this lesion for the next week. Protect the area from scratching or rubbing with an elizabethan collar if needed and you may apply a warm (not hot) compress twice a day for 5 minutes. Check the lesion every day. If the lesion does not start improving within a week or if it is getting worse, have him examined by the veterinarian. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Bumps on eye-lids can be cysts, but they can also be other masses like tumors. For this reason getting it checked is recommended. In the mean-time, I would check for squinting, moving away from your hand when you go to pet him on that side of the face, redness/blueness/whiteness of the eye-ball itself that is different from the other eye, or scratching/pawing at the eye. If any of these are occuring, then I would take Marley to a vet. If he isn't too concerned about it, and isn't squinting or moving away from you, and is only minimally pawing at it, then I would recommend getting an E-collar (you can pick one up from any emergency clinic without an appointment as it is now late in Australia), to prevent ongoing trauma to the eye which can get much much worse with scratching. I would then get Marley to your vet in the morning. Best of luck with Marley.

It definitely looks irritated and like there could be a possible cyst or growth there. I would have it examined by a vet in person so that it can be looked at more closely and treated as needed, especially since it's by the eye, bothersome, and been there a while. In addition, placing an Elizabethan (cone) collar on Midnight is a good idea as this will stop her from being able to paw at it and may reduce the irritation to it some.

I'd try applying a warm compress to it five minutes a day a couple times a day to see if that helps open it up and drain. If this does not help, it gets bigger, starts bleeding or has pus, or it starts to bother her, then I would have her seen by a vet for it. I hope this helps!

There is no way of knowing for sure without an examination though this represents a reason to seek veterinary care. This is usually determined with an examination and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) or a biopsy. Treatment depends on the findings up to that point. Hi, and thanks for your question. That is likely to be due to a mild to moderate conjunctivitis, probably secondary to a trauma or infection. At this stage it is not possible to rule out that a small mass is developing (stye is possible, but a small benign tumor should be considered as well). A check up would be needed as appropriate treatment would include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. Corneal injuries must be ruled out as well.
