My dog strains to poop with blood after new food. What should I do?

My dogs diet changed 2 days ago and now he pushes really hard when he poops and theirs blood

I would fast Charlie for 24 hours and then put him on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly over a few days. You can also add canned pumpkin to help with retaining moisture in the feces and so soften them. The blood is likely caused by pushing hard poop scratching on the surface of the rectum. Make sure he drinks enough water. Should the constipation not improve within the next two or three days then you need to see your veterinarian for an exam and an enema.

These signs could be compatible with a colitis, which is an inflammation of the last part of the intestine, the colon, usually related to dietary indiscretion. As a first approach, I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. Add a probiotic (like Pro-kolin for example) as this can help to speed up the recovery.
I would definitely recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence.

I don't recommend giving him anything over the counter, but if he is acting okay otherwise and not vomiting, you might consider withholding food for the evening and then try feeding him boiled chicken with rice to see if his stool will firm up. If he still has the soft stool and straining tomorrow, I highly recommend bringing him to the vet. At the vet's office, they will examine him, take his temperature, and likely check his stool for parasites, which can cause soft stool. They may also recommend an abdominal x-ray. This sounds like she is constipated. When the poop is very large or firm it can irritate the recal lining causing a small amount of blood on the poop. I would stop the new treats just in case, and add a tablespoon of plain canned pumpkin to each feeding to increase the fiber in her diet and make the stool softer so it will pass more easily, If she isn’t able go poop then she may need an enema at your veterinarian’s office. My dog didn't poop, is constipated, and has red blood in stool. Help?

It's not normal to have blood in the stool, and if Lola didn't go at all yesterday and her stool is currently hard, it could be that she has constipation. Constipation can be caused by anal sac impaction, intestinal parasites, a foreign body, too little fiber in the diet, lack of exercise, or even tumors in the GI tract. I recommend giving her a tablespoon of canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) mixed in with her food to see if that helps. If she is still constipated in 24-48 hours, she will need to see a vet as she will likely need a laxative or an enema. Your vet can diagnose the cause of the constipation as well.

Why does my raw-fed puppy have bloody diarrhea but seems fine?

It is possible it is the raw food diet diet causing Charley's bloody diarrhea. That's because raw meat carries bacteria that can make your dog sick. It could also be due to intestinal parasites, so make sure she is up to date on her deworming treatments. Withhold food for 12 to 24 hours then feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in a commercial dry dog food for her. I would recommend feeding the commercial day dog food diet to her because there is no risk of poisoning from bacteria, either to her or you. If Charley isn't fully vaccinated, there is a chance she could have parvovirus, but given that she is happy and energetic, it's more likely related to her diet. If she does become very lethargic or the bland diet doesn't help the diarrhea, I would take her into the vet.

Hello, sorry to hear about Benji. There are several causes for this including inflammation of his intestines, an infection with parasites or overgrowth if bacteria, or even a dietary indiscretion. You can try to offer a bland diet of plain white rice, skinless and boneless boiled chicken, and low fat cottage cheese for the next 3-5 days to rest his GI tract. If that does not work fully, you may add fiber to his diet with canned raw pumpkin for a few days. If this also does not work, or if his diarrhea with blood worsens or if he develops other signs such as vomiting, lethargy, and a decreased appetite then Benji should be evaluated by his veterinarian sooner.
