My dog didn't poop, is constipated, and has red blood in stool. Help?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 10 years and 10 months old | 8.5 lbs

A few small spots of brick red color blood on my dogs stool today. Stool is hard and she did not "go" at all yesterday. No noticeable damage to anus. No behavior changes. Eating, drinking as normal. Cause for serious concern, or ok to wait and check next stool?

It's not normal to have blood in the stool, and if Lola didn't go at all yesterday and her stool is currently hard, it could be that she has constipation. Constipation can be caused by anal sac impaction, intestinal parasites, a foreign body, too little fiber in the diet, lack of exercise, or even tumors in the GI tract. I recommend giving her a tablespoon of canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) mixed in with her food to see if that helps. If she is still constipated in 24-48 hours, she will need to see a vet as she will likely need a laxative or an enema. Your vet can diagnose the cause of the constipation as well.

Poor Trixie Start! It could be that the blood appeared in her stool because she was constipated and it caused some trauma to push it out. I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps. I recommend giving her a tablespoon of canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) mixed in with her food to see if that helps. If she is still constipated in 24-48 hours or she continues to have blood in her feces, she will need to see a vet as she will likely need a laxative or an enema. Your vet can diagnose the cause of the constipation as well.

Hi, and thanks for your question.
That may be due to constipation.
Mild constipation that lasts no more than two days can usually be resolved at home with increased fiber and hydration. Canned pumpkin (not pie filling, just the straight-up pumpkin) or liquid paraffin can be used, and should work straight away in the following 8 hours from administration. DO NOT TRY to give an enema as it could be dangerous and cause electrolyte imbalances and colon perforation.
If constipation lasts more than 24 hours from administration of those or 48 hours in general, a check up at your local vet is required.
In his case it is best to have him checked if the signs persist.

Why is my dog straining to poop with blood after eating new treats?

This sounds like she is constipated. When the poop is very large or firm it can irritate the recal lining causing a small amount of blood on the poop. I would stop the new treats just in case, and add a tablespoon of plain canned pumpkin to each feeding to increase the fiber in her diet and make the stool softer so it will pass more easily, If she isn’t able go poop then she may need an enema at your veterinarian’s office. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Lola. The coloring of her feces does not appear to be blood. If she is acting normal, I would monitor her next bowel movement closely. If diarrhea develops or the stool begins to contain mucus or obvious traces of blood (blood in the stool is frequently more liquidy), then she should see her veterinarian. What causes blood clots in my dog's poop and what should I do?

This can be from a mass in the rectum, irritation from pushing out hard stool, or she may have an anal infection causing the bleeding. If this continues I recommend a veterinary exam. They will check the anal sacs and palpate inside the rectum for a mass. Make sure the stool isn’t too firm. Adding fiber to the diet will bulk up the stool and make it easier to pass. My dog strains to poop with blood after new food. What should I do?

I would fast Charlie for 24 hours and then put him on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly over a few days. You can also add canned pumpkin to help with retaining moisture in the feces and so soften them. The blood is likely caused by pushing hard poop scratching on the surface of the rectum. Make sure he drinks enough water. Should the constipation not improve within the next two or three days then you need to see your veterinarian for an exam and an enema.

My puppy hasn't pooped in 1.5 days. Is it constipated? What to do?

Hi there and thanks for your post! Dogs should defecate at least once every day. If it has been 1 and 1/2 days since Luna's last bowel movement but is still eating and drinking normally, she may be a little constipated. You can try adding a tablespoon or two of plain canned pumpkin to her food twice daily for an extra fiber boost to help move things along. If that doesn't help, I would recommend Luna sees her veterinarian to rule out other causes of constipation such as a parasitic infection or other cause.
