Why is my dog straining to poop with blood after eating new treats?

I would fast Charlie for 24 hours and then put him on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly over a few days. You can also add canned pumpkin to help with retaining moisture in the feces and so soften them. The blood is likely caused by pushing hard poop scratching on the surface of the rectum. Make sure he drinks enough water. Should the constipation not improve within the next two or three days then you need to see your veterinarian for an exam and an enema.

This can be from a mass in the rectum, irritation from pushing out hard stool, or she may have an anal infection causing the bleeding. If this continues I recommend a veterinary exam. They will check the anal sacs and palpate inside the rectum for a mass. Make sure the stool isn’t too firm. Adding fiber to the diet will bulk up the stool and make it easier to pass. You could start giving her 2 tablespoons of canned pumpkin with her meals which may help with cases of mild constipation. I also agree that I am concerned that it’s blood. Food coloring does not typically look like this in the stool. I recommend to play it safe and have Carmine examined by the veterinarian. A bland diet, probiotic and possibly an antibiotic may be recommended. In the future, when giving new treats, stick to one type of treat at a time and don’t give very many. Gradually build up to more treats and more variety. Otherwise it is difficult to know if one treat in particular is causing stomach upset or if it is just too much of a new thing. Best of luck.

Poor girl. Bloody stool indicates at the very least that there is inflammation of the intestinal tract. It is likely the milk bone did not agree with her GI tract, but wasn't enough to cause severe illness. In these cases it is good practice to at least start a short course of antibiotics and probiotics to help things return to normal quickly. Therefore, I would recommend taking Lexy in to your vet to get her checked out and on medication. You can in the meantime start some probiotics (Culturelle over the counter or Fortilora/Proviable at your local pet store). I do hope that your fur baby's stools return to normal soon.
