My dog has diarrhea for days with blood. What can I do to help?

These signs could be compatible with a colitis, which is an inflammation of the last part of the colon, usually related to dietary indiscretion. Hi and thanks for posting! The cucumbers may the cause but it may be another issues causing the diarrhea as well such as parasitic infection, viral, or bacterial infection. Other causes may be gastrointestinal obstruction, pancreatitis, or other causes. Since this has been going on for 4 days, I would recommend Benji see his veterinarian very soon. Your vet may want to test his stool and may recommend x-rays or other diagnostic tests in order to pinpoint the cause. Until you can see your veterinarian, you can withhold food for 12-24 hours. Water is okay. Then reintroduce a small amount of food to him at a time. Adding some plain canned pumpkin puree (not the pie filling) to his food can help firm up the stool a bit. I hope this helps!

Hello, sorry to hear about Paigee. It most instances, bloody diarrhea is caused by inflammation of the GI tract. If frank blood, this is most often a large intestine inflammation, if dark blood, then this could be from the stomach or small intestine. Most often, inflammation of the GI tract is caused by some form of dietary indiscretion and is self limiting to a few days. If signs worsen, if she develops vomiting, innapetence, pain or lethargy, then she should be seen by a veterinarian. If she has frank blood diarrhea, she should be seen by her veterinarian. In the interim, you may try to feed her a bland diet of plain white rice, skinless and boneless boiled chicken, and low fat cottage cheese for the next 3-5 days. Hope this helps and best of luck.
