My dog stopped vomiting. When can I stop giving her Zofran?

Pet's info: Dog | Italian Greyhound | Female | spayed | 10 years and 2 months old | 14 lbs

So my Italian greyhound Lola had severe vomiting yesterday and it has now been a full 24 hrs since she last threw up. She's feeling better and has been eating small meals throughout the day. It was told to me by a vet to give her zofran that I already had at home (4mg every 12 hours), but I wasn't told for how long. She's now had 3 doses. I can't get in touch with my vet because of the holiday weekend. I just wasn't sure when to stop. She does have PLN/Glomerulonephritis.

If it has been over 24 hours since Lola vomited I think I would give one more dose of zofran and then discontinue the medication. As long as she is eating normally and does not continue to vomit I don't think you have much to worry about. However, if the vomiting starts again you may want to restart the zofran and have Lola examined by an emergency veterinarian (especially with her history of PLN). I hope Lola continues to feel good and you have a good holiday weekend!

Most veterinarians typically dose dogs at 0.5 - 1mg/kg of body weight. For example, if you were to give a 25 lb dog Zofer (Ondansetron), the dog would get 4mg or 8mg every 12 hours. A dog Googly's size would get about 12 - 25mg every 12 hours. If Googly is vomiting and not feeling well, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Googly so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be recommended. Ondansetron (Zofran) can cause constipation and atrial fibrillation even at normal doses. A normal dose would be 0.5mg to 1mg/kg twice daily, so your dog clearly got an overdose. This may be detrimental, but possibly also not. My dog ate old food and threw up. When should I call the vet?

If Lexus continues to vomit or starts to have diarrhea in the next 24-48 hours I would bring her in to see your veterinarian as she may benefit from anti-nausea medication, fluids, anti-diarrheal antibiotics and a prescription intestinal diet. If she continues to act normally with a normal activity level, normal frequent of stool and no vomiting/diarrhea, you are likely in the clear! Good luck!

Dog lethargic, not eating after vomiting and vet gave meds.

Sorry to hear about the trouble you're having with Jorja. I am going to go out on a limb and assume the anti nausea medication provided was Cerenia. This is typically a very effective medication for vomiting, and if there is still vomiting in the face of this, I would definitely recommend getting her back into the vet for re-examination. I would strongly recommend x-rays and blood work. Depending on the level of dehydration, hospitalization with IV fluids would likely be useful particularly if the vomiting is going to continue. Hope this makes sense.

My dog threw up partially digested food hours after eating. Is it serious?

I'm sorry Lizzie has been vomiting. Assuming she is acting normal otherwise, I would recommend holding her off of food for 24hrs. Be sure to provide her with plenty of fresh water so she does not become dehydrated. Hopefully resting her GI tract for a period of time. After vet-induced vomiting, when can my dog eat and stop throwing up?

Poor Jake! The injection that most veterinarians give to induce vomiting (apomorphine) normally causes vomiting for 10-15 minutes, but can last longer in some pets. If he's still vomiting for more than an hour or two, I would recommend taking him back for a recheck - there is an anti-nausea injection that can be given if needed to reverse the effects. I would wait until he has gone at least 4-6 hours without vomiting to feed him.
