My dog spits up water after drinking. Is she drinking too fast?

Pet's info: Dog | Rat Terrier | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 11 months old | 13 lbs

My rat terrier seems to spit up a little when she drinks water. It is usually just clear. Im wondering if it is possible she is just drinking her water too fast and if there is a way to slow her down. It isn't every time either.

She is likely just drinking the water too fast or too much at one time. The only concern would be her risk of aspirating the water. If she does this with food as well, I would have your vet take a look at her. Otherwise, just keep an eye on her and just let her have small amounts of water frequently rather than a large amount at any given time. This may help decrease the frequency of the spit up. What you describe sounds more like regurgitation. Sometimes this can happen to dogs when they drink water too quickly. This happens regularly to my dog actually after going on long walks. Something that can help is to not allow her to drink lots of water at once (this has worked for me).
If it continues to occur despite a normal water intake at once the further work-up for possible gastrointestinal diseases or other possible causes of regurgitation would be warranted.

Poor piper. This sounds like she is likely drinking too much too fast. I would try to limit the amount you put in her bowl at any given time. So I would only put a small amount, let her drink that, then wait 20-30 mins then give her some more to see if this helps. If it does, then you know you have discovered the problem. If she is still vomiting up her water then I would have your vet check her out as there could be some other things going on with her like acid reflux or megaesophagus. The flatulence can be caused from gulping her food and water or from the type of food she is on and how her body digests it. You can try changing her food but make sure you mix the old food with the new food for 10 days to prevent an upset tummy. I hope this helps!

It's possible that Iris may be drinking the water too quickly, and then vomiting it up. Slowing her down by offering smaller amounts of food and water more frequently rather than one large amount of food and water may help her keep it down and can help reduce the chances of possible bloat. If she continues to vomit, or otherwise acts ill, scheduling a vet appointment to look for underlying issues is best.

My dog throws up food after eating fast. Is it serious?

This is definitely something that can occur as a result of how fast food and water are ingested. The maze dog food bowls work great or the bowls that only dispense a small amount of food at a time. You can try and elevate the food bowl and see if this helps. If the episodes become more frequent then I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at Pepper and consider switching to a different food. I hope this helps! My Yorkie chokes and throws up water after drinking. Is this normal?

This does not sound like a breed-specific issue or a normal behavior. It sounds like Chopi is either drinking his water too quickly / too vigorously, or he is having trouble swallowing it for one reason or another. Depending on how often this is occurring, this might be something worth having checked out by you veterinarian. There are definitely structural issues in the mouth, esophagus, and upper respiratory tract that can result in difficulty swallowing. If it is a behavioral issue / OCD resulting in overly quick water consumption, there are device you can obtain that attempt to limit how quickly your dog laps up the liquid. You can also physically limit how much he drinks by simply moving the bowl away manually. I don't think this is something that you need to be running off to the vet about right away, but definitely something that is worth continuing to monitor for any worsening or changes. My dog gulps water and then throws it up. Is this a serious problem?

If it only happens when he drinks that quickly and is eating and not regurgitating or vomiting any other time then I would think he is ok. If that is not the case then I would have him examined by your Vet and have X-rays done to check his esophagus. I would prevent him from drinking so much so quickly. Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If Kubi is drinking too fast, he can choke a bit & bring up some phlegm. The ACV is a good idea, as the slight acidity might slow down the gulping. You can also add something to the water dish so it is just a bit more difficult for Kubi to take in too much too fast. An upturned secondary dish works well ( water dish should look like a bundt pan). If this continues, it would be a good idea to discuss things with your veterinarian. I do not think this is anything too serious, but Kubi may have some reflux going on that might respond well to medication. Take care.

My dog vomits after drinking water. Could it be bloat? What helps?

Thank you very much for your question. Because she is a deep chested dog, we do worry about bloating or other gastrointestinal stomach disease when there is an alteration in drinking or eating. You can fix the airbag problem by doing a few different things. First, you can elevate all of your water bowls so that she may not vomit as often. Second, you can give her a watering system that is constantly moving water that mimics a sink. These are available on many of the commercial retail online sites. Lastly, you can give her 1/4 or half of the amount of water that you normally give her when you are there. By this I mean you won’t give half of the normal water she drinks. But only give half if she is in a shaded, cool, or inside air-conditioned place. If she continues to vomit her water or food often, you can ask your veterinarian to put you on a daily anti-vomiting medication. Thanks a lot for your question. I hope I have helped.
