My dog vomits after drinking water. Could it be bloat? What helps?

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 1 year and 11 months old | 65 lbs

I have a question. My dog when she drinks water and I don't monitor the amount she drinks. She ends up throwing it up after. Is it something I should worry about ? I'm worried about leaving her alone one day on her own with water.

Thank you very much for your question. Because she is a deep chested dog, we do worry about bloating or other gastrointestinal stomach disease when there is an alteration in drinking or eating.

You can fix the airbag problem by doing a few different things. First, you can elevate all of your water bowls so that she may not vomit as often. Second, you can give her a watering system that is constantly moving water that mimics a sink. These are available on many of the commercial retail online sites. Lastly, you can give her 1/4 or half of the amount of water that you normally give her when you are there. By this I mean you won’t give half of the normal water she drinks. But only give half if she is in a shaded, cool, or inside air-conditioned place.

If she continues to vomit her water or food often, you can ask your veterinarian to put you on a daily anti-vomiting medication.

Poor piper. This sounds like she is likely drinking too much too fast. I would try to limit the amount you put in her bowl at any given time. So I would only put a small amount, let her drink that, then wait 20-30 mins then give her some more to see if this helps. If it does, then you know you have discovered the problem. If she is still vomiting up her water then I would have your vet check her out as there could be some other things going on with her like acid reflux or megaesophagus. The flatulence can be caused from gulping her food and water or from the type of food she is on and how her body digests it. You can try changing her food but make sure you mix the old food with the new food for 10 days to prevent an upset tummy. I hope this helps!

It's possible that Iris may be drinking the water too quickly, and then vomiting it up. Slowing her down by offering smaller amounts of food and water more frequently rather than one large amount of food and water may help her keep it down and can help reduce the chances of possible bloat. If she continues to vomit, or otherwise acts ill, scheduling a vet appointment to look for underlying issues is best.

She may be vomiting as a consequence of her liver disease (depending on the underlying cause of the inflammation) or she could have developed a separate problem. It is likely wise to have blood work and urine testing repeated. Be sure to have her checked for pancreatitis. She may even need an abdominal ultrasound by a board certified radiologist. In the meantime, you never want to limit water. However, you could offer her smaller amounts at one time to see if this helps. Be sure to continue offer it though so she can consume as much as she wants. I hope this information helps!

Why is my dog with heart cancer throwing up clear liquid after water?

Depends on if there is a tumor on the heart causing compression of the esophagus leading to regurgitation, etc. If the cancer is spreading and beginning to affect other areas of the body such as the GI tract, then vomiting can certainly be a clinical symptom that is seen. Some dogs drink too quickly leading them to vomit up some of the water. I would recommend allowing her to drink small portions of water at a time and fill the bowl with water about 1/4 of the normal amount. Once she is finished drinking that amount, wait about 15 minutes and if she holds that down ok, you can give her more. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Hello. I am sorry to hear about Lolly. There are a few other things that you can investigate that could be causing her clinical signs. Myasthenia Gravis is a condition that could be causing regurgitation, so you can discuss this with your vet. Other motility disorders as well could be present, so biopsies of the stomach and small intestines can be performed to check for these motility disorders. If you work these up and cannot find a reason, you can discuss with your vet about trying medications to help with motility including metoclopramide, or cisapride. There is also the possibility of diseases of the pancrease (EPI vs. pancreatitis) so you can have blood-work done to check for this. Also, discuss with your vet about checking for Addison's disease. Full bloodwork and some other specific tests are suggested. Good luck with Lolly.

I am sorry to hear about Mia. If she is very lethargic/weak, has blood in the vomit, or has a painful abdomen then I think she needs to be seen by her vet right away. If she seems energetic then you can try removing her food and water and fasting her for 6 hours (no food, no water,no treats, no grass or things in the yard if she goes outside) and see if the vomiting stops. If it continues she needs to visit her vet. My dog gulps water and throws up clear goo. What should I do?

Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If Kubi is drinking too fast, he can choke a bit & bring up some phlegm. The ACV is a good idea, as the slight acidity might slow down the gulping. You can also add something to the water dish so it is just a bit more difficult for Kubi to take in too much too fast. An upturned secondary dish works well ( water dish should look like a bundt pan). If this continues, it would be a good idea to discuss things with your veterinarian. I do not think this is anything too serious, but Kubi may have some reflux going on that might respond well to medication. Take care.
