My dog gulps water and throws up clear goo. What should I do?

If it only happens when he drinks that quickly and is eating and not regurgitating or vomiting any other time then I would think he is ok. If that is not the case then I would have him examined by your Vet and have X-rays done to check his esophagus. I would prevent him from drinking so much so quickly. Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Especially in bulldogs, it is not uncommon for them to exhibit regurgitation of their water or food. This is due to their conformation, as brachycephalic dogs. I recommend contacting your regular veterinarian to let them know that Thor is having these clinical signs. There are medications that can be used to help treat regurgitation, such as metoclopramide, which functions to keep the GI tract moving food and water in the right direction. I hope this is helpful!

Be sure that you know if she is vomiting (belly goes in and out) versus regurgitation (burps up fluid) versus a cough with a terminal retch (cough is first followed by a gag of fluid). I don't know how old Honey is but she only weighs 5 lbs and that means if she is truly vomiting then she could get dehydrated quickly. If the vomiting is non-stop she should be taken to your Vet if open or an emergency hospital. If it has been a couple of times remove all water and food. Do not offer water for 4-6 hours of no vomiting and offer small amounts and ice chips. Do not offer food until 12-24 hours of no vomiting and offer it as a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day as small frequent meals. If she continues to vomit while fasted or once she starts eating she needs to see a Vet. Causes of vomiting are: intestinal parasites, foreign body (something is stuck and needs surgery to remove), dietary indiscretion, viral or bacterial infections, metabolic conditions, toxin ingestion, food allergy or intolerance. Poor piper. This sounds like she is likely drinking too much too fast. I would try to limit the amount you put in her bowl at any given time. So I would only put a small amount, let her drink that, then wait 20-30 mins then give her some more to see if this helps. If it does, then you know you have discovered the problem. If she is still vomiting up her water then I would have your vet check her out as there could be some other things going on with her like acid reflux or megaesophagus. The flatulence can be caused from gulping her food and water or from the type of food she is on and how her body digests it. You can try changing her food but make sure you mix the old food with the new food for 10 days to prevent an upset tummy. I hope this helps!

Depends on if there is a tumor on the heart causing compression of the esophagus leading to regurgitation, etc. If the cancer is spreading and beginning to affect other areas of the body such as the GI tract, then vomiting can certainly be a clinical symptom that is seen. Some dogs drink too quickly leading them to vomit up some of the water. I would recommend allowing her to drink small portions of water at a time and fill the bowl with water about 1/4 of the normal amount. Once she is finished drinking that amount, wait about 15 minutes and if she holds that down ok, you can give her more. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. It's possible that Iris may be drinking the water too quickly, and then vomiting it up. Slowing her down by offering smaller amounts of food and water more frequently rather than one large amount of food and water may help her keep it down and can help reduce the chances of possible bloat. If she continues to vomit, or otherwise acts ill, scheduling a vet appointment to look for underlying issues is best.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry that Murphy is vomiting. I would be concerned about a few different problems including a persistent right aortic arch (PRAA), or a sliding hiatal hernia. These are congenital malformations that can cause vomiting/regurgitation especially after eating. I would try to get a video of the episodes to see if it is true vomiting vs. regurgitation as this will help narrow down possibilities. It is not normal for him to vomit that much.
