My dog spaces out and drools without convulsing. Is it a seizure?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 12 lbs

Sometimes my dog spaces out and starts drooling and moving his mouth, almost as if he was talking. He seems coherent like he can hear me but has a delayed reaction. Someone said it was a seizure but he doesn't convulse. It doesn't happen all the time but it's not something that happened only once or twice either. I've had him since 2/17 it's now almost 5/17and I saw it about 7 times. Could it be a seizure or something else? And what can I do to help him?

Seizures don't always include convulsions. Charlie should be examined by your veterinarian to diagnose the underlying cause if possible. A consult with a veterinary neurologist may be indicated.
In the meantime, begin a log of his events. Note the time of day/night, duration, behavior before/after the event, diet and any other pertinent information. This may aid in the diagnosis.
