My dog has a sore leg and is sick. Should I worry about Alabama Rot?

I'm not sure I would be overly worried about this at this stage but if you are worried you should have Jake examined by your vet. You know Jake best. Many skin lesions will look similar grossly so it is hard to say if this is Alabama Rot or not. Alabama rot is pretty rare overall so I think the chances of that being the diagnosis is slim. If you are worried you should definitely have him examined by your vet. Better to be safe than sorry. Best wishes.

No this does not look at all like Alabama rot at this point. Alabama rot starts affecting the kidneys within a very short time, watch for signs such as excessive drinking and urination, lack of appetite and lethargy. if you see any of those symptoms, take him to the vet to have a blood test done.

Hello. This does not sound like Alabama Rot ( Cutaneous and Renal Glomerular Vasculopathy ) as most dogs will have signs of renal disease called azotemia. While acute vomiting is a sign of this, it would not just stop after 24 hours. Thrombocytopenia is often seen on bloodwork & the skin lesions can be quite impressive. If Poppy is eating, drinking & urinating normally, & the skin irritation is resolving, then the chances of this being CRGV is quite unlikely. Any concerns, please return to your vet for follow up blood work which will identify if there are any ongoing renal changes that are indicative of this disease. Hello. It is very difficult to determine what is going on with the leg, but the area looks like some kind of raised lesion. I think this is a good one to have your veterinarian take a hands-on look to make sure everything is OK. I hesitate to tell you to take a watch & wait approach with this. I am sorry to hear about Ella! If this area has been present for awhile and is getting worse I would recommend a visit to a vet. In the meantime, you can place an e-collar on Ella to prevent her from licking the area which may allow it to start to heal. You can apply a topical antibiotic ointment to the area and with the e-collar on she won't be able to lick it off. The vet can examine the area and check to see if there are signs of infection or if there could be parasites such as mites present that require treatment. Best of luck to you and Ella!

Sudocream generally does not help with any skin condition in dogs, Alabama rot is getting more common in the UK but it is still not very common, kidney disease starts after the skin lesions appears and it all happens in a matter of a couple weeks. it doesn't sound like this is the case with your dog, i would believe the skin issue is unrelated to the kidney disease in this case and probably needs to be treated separately by your vet.

I am so sorry to hear about Sadie! Without seeing it in person it is difficult to say what the problem is. With her history and a newly occurring, large lump, I would be concerned for some type of trauma. I think you are right to be concerned about bleeding under the skin. This does not always have to be severe, but it sounds like she is in pain and I think it would be safest to have her examined. At the very least they will alleviate her discomfort and your fears!
