Vet diagnosed hot spot, but my dog vomited. Could it be Alabama Rot?

No this does not look at all like Alabama rot at this point. Alabama rot starts affecting the kidneys within a very short time, watch for signs such as excessive drinking and urination, lack of appetite and lethargy. if you see any of those symptoms, take him to the vet to have a blood test done.

Poor Elsa! Since you have heard of some reports of this illness in that area, I would recommend to have her seen by your vet. Alabama Rot can be a very serious illness and some do have successful treatments if treatment is started early. On the other hand, there is a high probability that it isn't Alabama Rot and she may just need some antibiotics or other meds to help her feel better. It is better to have her seen and have this ruled out rather than wait to see if it gets worse. I hope this helps!

You can buy online or at your local pet store chlorhexidine based pads which are an antimicrobial you can apply twice daily for a week. If no improvement, have him evaluated by your veterinarian at that time for further assessment and treatment as other possibilities include skin allergies or mange for instance. Good luck!

I'm not sure I would be overly worried about this at this stage but if you are worried you should have Jake examined by your vet. You know Jake best. Many skin lesions will look similar grossly so it is hard to say if this is Alabama Rot or not. Alabama rot is pretty rare overall so I think the chances of that being the diagnosis is slim. If you are worried you should definitely have him examined by your vet. Better to be safe than sorry. Best wishes.

Hello, sorry to hear about Charlie. It sounds like he may have a local area of infection. I agree that the area itself will likely take a long time to heal, however, if he is vomiting and having a lethargy (systemic signs) then this is more concerning for an infection that may be spreading to other parts of his body. This does warrant an emergency visit today. There is a high possibility that his vomiting and decreased appetite is associated with his wound and infection, but there are also other causes for these clinical signs as well. Yes, it looks like a folliculitis but in these cases mites infection is always in differential.). Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking (if any). At this stage vomiting seems completely unrelated, and I would recommend to approach it by withholding food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. If the signs persist a check up would be ideal though. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Rosie! From the pictures it looks like Rosie may have a hot spot (superficial skin infection). Hot spots can start off small then spread quickly and become larger and painful. Goldens commonly get them from ear infections or from being wet from swimming. I recommend that you take her to the Vet today. The Vet will clip the fur away, clean the area and prescribe antibiotics, steroids, and likely something topical. They will check for an ear infection and prescribe ear wash and ear drops if needed. I hope this helps and I hope Rosie has a speedy recovery!
