My dog ate onion. What urgent symptoms mean I need a vet visit?

Jesse should be examined by the veterinarian. The rapid breathing could indicate that she is in pain. Onions can affect the red blood cells and cause destruction of the cells and this can also effect the respiratory and cardiovascular system. I recommend to play it safe and have her examined by her veterinarian quickly. The doctor will need an easy blood test to see the amount t of red blood cells. It is unlikely that there was enough onion present to cause a problem, but eating that much pizza will likely cause some gastroenteritis (inflammation of the stomach and intestines) which could lead to vomiting and diarrhea. He could also develop pancreatitis. If he starts vomiting, having diarrhea, isn't wanting to eat, or seems lethargic, please take him to your vet for treatment. In the meantime, withhold for at least 12 hours, then offer small amounts of. a bland diet such as boiled chicken and white rice for the next couple of days. Onions will cause oxidative damage to the red blood cells which can result in anemia. If the onions are going to be an issue, it will be a few days before you would see this, and generally would present as decreased appetite and lethargy. If those symptoms are noted, get him in to your vet for bloodwork. Keep an eye on Loki for the next few days because, as you already know, onions can be very dangerous in these little guys. If you notice that Loki seems more lethargic or tired than normal, take him to your vet right away. Once there your vet can perform a lab test (a CBC) to make sure the onions did not cause a problem.

Such a small amount of onion is unlikely to cause any toxic effect (linked to anemia and weakness after a few days) - it may be hamburger meat or other rich food which has triggered the vomiting. I would recommend giving oral rehydration fluids (pedialyte) and feeding small but frequent meals of a very low fat, bland diet such as boiled skinless chicken, brown rice and canned pumpkin (or canned specialist intestinal low fat diet). If she just got into the trash within the past two hours, you can take her into a vet immediately to have vomiting induced to get the onions out of her system to prevent any toxicity from occurring. Otherwise, you can monitor her for now. There likely isn't enough onion in these rings to cause toxic symptoms, but to be safe if you see any lethargy, weakness, ataxia, pale gums, hyper salivation, vomiting, diarrhea, or bloody urine, I would have Piper seen by a vet immediately.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. In order to get a toxic amount of onions, a normal sized Jack Russel Terrier would have to have eaten about a whole onion. If it was just a few pieces I wouldn't be too concerned, however if it was a large amount I would have her seen by a vet for a blood test to see if her red cells are affected. Otherwise, I would watch her for vomiting and diarrhea, as mold from old food contains toxins that can cause severe gastritis, as well as tremors and seizures. If you are unsure of how much she had, I would have her seen by a vet for a blood test. If you look at her gums and they look brown instead of pink, or she has any trouble breathing or is weak and lethargic, then this is very very serious and you have to get her to a vet right away. Often clinical signs are delayed, starting at about 24 hours and peaking at 72 hours post ingestion. Trying to decrease the amount of toxin absorbed right away is recommended, so if there is a chance that Gucci ate any of the onions then I would suggest bringing him to the vet to have him vomit (if it has been <2 hours) and activated charcoal. Otherwise, monitor him very carefully for signs of lethargy, weakness, a high heart rate, brown/dark urine, brown/dark gums, inappetance, etc. If you see any of these signs bring in Gucci right away to the vet.
