My dog ate onions and is sick. When should I worry and see a vet?

Good question! Onions in larger quantities are toxic to dogs but Milo should be fine with that amount. It is unlikely that there was enough onion present to cause a problem, but eating that much pizza will likely cause some gastroenteritis (inflammation of the stomach and intestines) which could lead to vomiting and diarrhea. He could also develop pancreatitis. If he starts vomiting, having diarrhea, isn't wanting to eat, or seems lethargic, please take him to your vet for treatment. In the meantime, withhold for at least 12 hours, then offer small amounts of. a bland diet such as boiled chicken and white rice for the next couple of days. Onions will cause oxidative damage to the red blood cells which can result in anemia. If the onions are going to be an issue, it will be a few days before you would see this, and generally would present as decreased appetite and lethargy. If those symptoms are noted, get him in to your vet for bloodwork. Oh no! Poor Waffle! Decreased energy, pale gums (due to anemia), increased heart rate/breathing rate, vomiting, and a reduced appetite are all signs of potential onion toxicity. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. In order to get a toxic amount of onions, a normal sized Jack Russel Terrier would have to have eaten about a whole onion. If it was just a few pieces I wouldn't be too concerned, however if it was a large amount I would have her seen by a vet for a blood test to see if her red cells are affected. Otherwise, I would watch her for vomiting and diarrhea, as mold from old food contains toxins that can cause severe gastritis, as well as tremors and seizures. If you are unsure of how much she had, I would have her seen by a vet for a blood test. If you look at her gums and they look brown instead of pink, or she has any trouble breathing or is weak and lethargic, then this is very very serious and you have to get her to a vet right away. Yes, carry on monitoring him for another day or two. If you notice any signs of poisoning, like vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, lack of appetite, take Hugo to your regular vets for a check-up. However, the amount of onion he ate (it was not much for his size) and the fact that 16hrs after ingestion he looks ok means that most likely he is out of the woods.

There is no way of treating this at home without knowing what it is exactly. If this is a gastrointestinal obstruction, this needs to be treated with surgery most likely. Also, mushrooms can result in liver toxicity in dogs that tends to be significant. Even if he vomited some of it, there is still likely some left in his system. I think it would be best to have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check some basic lab work to check for signs of liver toxicity and treat accordingly. Good luck and have a great day!
