My 7-month-old puppy in heat sneezes a lot when waking. Is it serious?

From your description, it sounds like this could be a reverse sneeze. These are not dangerous (unless it happens continuously, then we would need to look for a cause). Hi there. Sneezing could be caused by allergies, or an upper respiratory infection. If he's acting fairly normal otherwise (eating and drinking fine, active, etc.) you could opt to monitor him for now and see how things go for the next few days. The problem may resolve on its own, similar to when we get a minor cold or allergy flare-up. If there is no improvement in the next 2-3 days, or if your pup develops other symptoms such as coughing, thick green or yellow nasal discharge, or begins acting very lethargic or not eating, then I would recommend having him seen by a veterinarian for treatment.

Your puppy may have an upper respiratory tract infection which can be common in young puppies because their immune systems aren't fully developed. He may need some antibiotics and/or antihistamines to help stop the sneezing. The other cause of sneezing could be from a foreign body, like a piece of grass, that has become stuck in hos nose. Puppies do breathe a bit faster while asleep than adult dogs. An occasional sneeze or nasal drip is fine. Monitor for lethargy, decreased appetite, difficulty breathing or a yellow or green nasal discharge. See your veterinarian for an exam if any of these symptoms develop.

I recommend to take your puppy in to have an exam. Although something like a cold or a virus is a very common cause of sneezing, if you notice it more after eating or drinking that can be suspicious for a cleft palate. I'm wondering if Daisy might be reverse sneezing when she's making this new noise. A reverse sneeze and a sneeze can have similar causes - anything that irritates the nose and throat including allergens, upper respiratory infections, nasal foreign material like pieces of grass or even parasites can all cause sneezing and reverse sneezing. I usually don't get too concerned about either one unless there is also nasal discharge or the sneezing/reverse sneezing is occuring frequently enough that it seems to be affecting the pet's ability to rest. If so I think that your best bet is to see a vet unfortunately.
