My 6-month-old puppy snorts weirdly; is it a cold or serious?

Sometimes puppies eat too fast, and because they are not very experienced in eating solid food yet, the food ends up in the wrong place, ie not directly in the esophagus right away, or excess food tickles the back of the mouth which then causes a reverse sneeze that sounds like the sound you have heard. This is not a problem. However, if this happens very often, if your puppy starts to have breathing troubles or starts losing weight or if you observe food coming from his nose, you will need to have him examined by a veterinarian as there could be a malformation that causes a problem. But generally a once in a while reverse sneeze while eating is a normal occurrence for a puppy.

This sounds a lot scarier than it is and can usually be treated well with oral medications, though extreme cases may require surgery. Usually in more serious disease, we are seeing the signs associated with the animal not feeling well for days at a time, instead of just a single cough incident though. I would recommend trying to take a video the next time she makes the sound and seeing if there are any common triggers for it. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sugar is super cute! It sounds like Sugar may be reverse sneezing. It sounds like a sucking in sneeze through the nose where they tend to hold their mouth open and grimace. I recommend searching YouTube for videos and see if that is what she is doing. It is common in some breeds (beagles). Some causes are allergies, inhaled some dust particles, foreign material stuck up the nose or above the soft palpate. If the episodes continue video tape it and take her to the Vet for an exam. I hope this helps and I wish you and Sugar the best!

Poor Charlie! Look up a YouTube video of a “reverse sneeze” to see if this is what he is doing. If so, this is nothing to worry about and you can Help him stop by rubbing him from head to tail. Sometimes Benadryl on a regular basis will help decrease the frequency. See link below. If this isn’t what he is doing then I would have your vet look at him. With him being so young, he could have a viral infection or an upper respiratory infection which needs to be treated. If left untreated he could get worse. If there is no nasal discharge, coughing, lethargy, etc then I would not be overly worried about just sneezing. I suggest you video her doing the behavior and then take her to the vet for an exam. Show them the video in case she doesn't sneeze during the exam. It could be allergies, it could be reverse sneezing, it could be a piece of grass or something up in her nose.

It sure could be reverse sneezing and that is the most likely diagnosis based on your description. If Oliver is eating and drinking and acting fine then I would just monitor for now. If the "sneezing" or weird breathing happens again, or if he stops eating, I would get him to the vet for an exam. Try to video tape the episode so you can show your vet what you are talking about.
