Why is my dog sneezing loudly, scared, and less active than usual?

What a cutie pie! I would try putting a humidifier in the room with him overnight or putting him in the bathroom while you run a steamy shower for 10-15 minutes to provide some beneficial moisture to his airways. If he develops discharge from the nose, coughing, eye discharge, decreased appetite, decreased energy these would be reasons to seek veterinary care. You can ask your vet if it would be ok to give him an antihistamine such as Benadryl or Zyrtec to see if it could be allergy related as well. We do use these drugs in dogs, but I always recommend checking with your vet before starting any new medication.

If Jeter keeps sneezing frequently, and there has not been any improvement to Benadryl, it would be worth trying stronger anti-allergic medication (for example steroids) or / and a course of antibiotics. If this treatment does not make any difference, the next step would be checking the nasal cavity with a camera.

If he's acting fairly normal otherwise (eating and drinking fine, active, etc.) you could opt to monitor him for now and see how things go for the next few days. The problem may resolve on its own, similar to when we get a minor cold or allergy flare-up. If there is no improvement in the next 2-3 days, or if your pup develops other symptoms such as coughing, thick green or yellow nasal discharge, or begins acting very lethargic or not eating, then I would recommend having him seen by a veterinarian for treatment.

This sign could be compatible with an upper respiratory tract inflammation/infection or eventually to a persistent rhinitis (inflammatory, allergic, infective). A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately if the signs persist more than 12 hours. Antibiotics may be needed. It could be that Yoda got into something outside that caused him to sneeze, causing a reaction. Unfortunately, I can't say it's safe for him to have a Benadryl (it's also illegal for me to recommend it) and given that he has stopped sneezing, I wouldn't give him one. Hello. There are quite a few YouTube videos showing reverse sneezing so you can easily view these to see if Loki is doing the same. If he is, this may just be a normal think for him & usually requires no treatment. Benadryl has never been very effective in dogs, but we do have excellent prescription medications such as the antihistamine hydroxyzine to the newest drugs to combat allergies including Apoquel & Cytopoint. But, I think Loki may just have a mild upper respiratory virus that should run its course in a week or so. Keep vigilant on the ear, that can actually give him more problems then anything else. Excessive sneezing like this could be a sign of foreign material in the nasal cavity (sometimes a piece of fluff or plant material can get stuck), or potentially a nasal polyp, tumor or infection. If this extreme sneezing continues I'd recommend having your vet examine Pilsner - they might recommend sedation for a nasal flush and exam.
