My dog keeps sneezing loudly. What else can I do besides Benadryl?

If this has been going on for several days without any improvement, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Ivy so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. She may or may not need an antibiotic if this is an upper respiratory infection. If she has not had an antihistamine before, you can always try Benadryl or Zyrtec but I would discuss this with your vet first. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Other possible causes include a possible foreign body stuck in the nose or another part of the upper respiratory system. I would recommend that you have Sadie evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. If based on further history and physical examination it seems like allergies are more likely, medications such as Benadryl to be used on an as needed basis would be recommended. If a foreign body is suspected, further imaging such as with a CT scan may be pursued to confirm that. Hopefully, this is not anything serious. Good luck and have a great day!

Handsome boy! He may have allergies from spring pollen or a mild cold. You can give Benadryl to reduce the nasal discharge and itching. There is a section on this website with information and dosages of common over the counter medications that are safe for dogs. if he stops eating, the discharge gets green or he's very lethargic then I would recommend a veterinary exam. While she could be experiencing seasonal allergies, an upper respiratory tract infection is more likely given the congestion and nasal discharge. I suspect she will need antibiotic therapy to start. I am glad that you have already determined that it is not related to her heart disease as that is always the concern. If her symptoms do not improve with antibiotics or her condition worsens, then x-rays of her chest will be needed. I do not think that Benadryl will significantly improve her symptoms. hope this information helps!

Hello. There are quite a few YouTube videos showing reverse sneezing so you can easily view these to see if Loki is doing the same. If he is, this may just be a normal think for him & usually requires no treatment. Benadryl has never been very effective in dogs, but we do have excellent prescription medications such as the antihistamine hydroxyzine to the newest drugs to combat allergies including Apoquel & Cytopoint. But, I think Loki may just have a mild upper respiratory virus that should run its course in a week or so. Keep vigilant on the ear, that can actually give him more problems then anything else. What a cutie pie! I would try putting a humidifier in the room with him overnight or putting him in the bathroom while you run a steamy shower for 10-15 minutes to provide some beneficial moisture to his airways. If he develops discharge from the nose, coughing, eye discharge, decreased appetite, decreased energy these would be reasons to seek veterinary care. You can ask your vet if it would be ok to give him an antihistamine such as Benadryl or Zyrtec to see if it could be allergy related as well. We do use these drugs in dogs, but I always recommend checking with your vet before starting any new medication.
