My dog has congestion, heaving, backward sneezing. Can Benadryl help?

Hi there! You can give him some benadryl (diphenhydramine) at 1 mg per pound. The tablets usually come in 25mg. You can go a tad higher too and it usually won't hurt anything. For example, if the dog is 10 pounds, I'll just have owners give 1/2 of the 25mg tablet which comes out to 12.5mg, or if the dog is 5 pounds, then 1/4 tablet which is 6.25 mg, etc. If your dog is really small, you can pick up the children's benadryl and use that to get a more accurate dose. The benadryl may or may not help, but it can't hurt. I think it's worth a try until you can get him in to see his veterinarian again. I would have him seen though since he has started medications and it still seems to be getting worse. Just be sure to check labels and make sure the only ingredient is diphenhydramine (or diphenhydramine hcl). Some of the benadryl products can have pseudoephedrine in them, and you don't want that. Allergies are a possibility along with the start of a respiratory infection. You can give Benadryl to dogs and at his weight it would be closer to a whole 25 mg tablet instead of a 1/4. I would say get him checked if the symptoms continue or you notice them progress

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Frequent sneezing is usually related to upper airways infection, irritation or an allergy. If Jeter keeps sneezing frequently, and there has not been any improvement to Benadryl, it would be worth trying stronger anti-allergic medication (for example steroids) or / and a course of antibiotics. If this treatment does not make any difference, the next step would be checking the nasal cavity with a camera.

You can try some Benadryl twice a day to see if this helps. See link below. You can also put her in a small bathroom with a hot steamy shower going to allow the steam to help break up the mucus. If it isn't improving, then I would have your vet take a look at her. Unfortunately, a lot of dog end up needing antibiotics to help get rid of these upper respiratory infections. Poor Dolly! You can try to hold her in a small bathroom while your run a hot shower and let her breathe in the steam. Obviously, don’t put her in the water. And picking her up allows her to get more steaks since steam rises. You can also try some Benadryl. See the link below for more information. If she isn’t improving or if she is lethargic or not eating then I would have your vet look at her. Your vet will be able to listen to her heart and lungs and help determine the cause. Yes you can, there is no major interactions between Benadryl and these other medications but i would always recommend consulting the vet that is treating Tater-Tot on a regular basis to make sure he is ok with it too.

Tiny Tim is a little old man and just like in people old dogs can get congestive heart failure. Having fluid in his chest, coughing at night while sleeping, exercise intolerance can certainly point towards such a congestive condition. Of course he could also have contracted an upper respiratory infection or inhaled a foreign body that is now stuck somewhere in the upper airways. You should take Tiny Tim to your veterinarian for a geriatric exam. A respiratory infection is usually treated with antibiotics and sometimes anti-inflammatories, A foreign body needs to be found and removed, and if a heart condition is diagnosed, he will be prescribed diuretics and medication to help the heart do its job more effectively. Your vet will want to do blood tests and an x-ray of the chest.
