My pug is sneezing a lot with discharge. Is it allergies or a cold?

Pets can get nasal discharge for many reasons and the most common are infections or allergies. With her older age and because she is a pug (short muzzled) if she is continuing to have discharge beyond 5 days or if she is getting worse at any point, I recommend to have her examined. Sometimes omega 3 fatty acids can help and feeding her a high quality diet can help to keep her immune system strong. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

This could be due to a foreign body located in the nose for example or possibly a fungal infection or a bacterial infection that requires a longer course of antibiotics. This sign could be compatible with an upper respiratory tract inflammation/infection or eventually to a chronic rhinitis (inflammatory, allergic, infective). A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed. Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. Sneezing can definitely be due to allergies and that is probably the most common reason. Some medications for allergies can be started for this to be used on an as needed basis. If her diarrhea or sneezing persist, I recommend that you have Irie evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I would recommended Kaya see her veterinarian for an exam so her vet can determine whether or not she has an infection or whether it is just caused by an allergy and to determine what treatment may be most appropriate. An upper respiratory infection of some kind is certainly a possibility. It sounds like she may have some inflammation that isn't usually present, Such a short respiratory tract makes pugs vulnerable to inhaled irritants and infections more so than other breeds of dog. I recommend getting her seen by your vet if the symptoms persist more than a few days and sooner if she develops signs of illness, such as a nasal or eye discharge, lack of energy and/or appetite. Also, with her rubbing her face more, her eyes are more vulnerable to injury and irritation than other dogs, so make sure she doesn't hurt herself rubbing her face.

Hi there. Sneezing could be caused by allergies, or an upper respiratory infection. If he's acting fairly normal otherwise (eating and drinking fine, active, etc.) you could opt to monitor him for now and see how things go for the next few days. The problem may resolve on its own, similar to when we get a minor cold or allergy flare-up. If there is no improvement in the next 2-3 days, or if your pup develops other symptoms such as coughing, thick green or yellow nasal discharge, or begins acting very lethargic or not eating, then I would recommend having him seen by a veterinarian for treatment.
