My dog is sneezing with a bloody nose and discharge. What to do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | unneutered | 52 lbs

My 1 year old golden retriever had been sneezing for 2 days. I just saw some blood on one nostril and watery discharge on the other. But he is active. Please advice as to what it could be or what I should do to make him feel better right now because it's night and the vets are shut.

With a dog as young as he, my first guess would be a seed or bit of grass that he has sneezed into his nasal passage. Since he seems to be feeling okay otherwise I don't think he needs anything special done before he gets in to see the vet. If they don't find something else causing his sneezing, they may need to sedate him in order to explore his nasal passages for any sign of a foreign body.
