Dog sneezed out bordetella vaccine. Is he protected from kennel cough?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 2 months and 4 days old | 13 lbs

Gave bordetella intranasally and he sneezed some out when I put some in. Then went back again and put in more of the dose. Most of the dose went in but some came out, is he protected?

Yes, the way this vaccination works is contact with the mucosa of the nose. Typically there is more than enough vaccine in the bordetella vial because many times it is sneezed out or runs out, so yes, he should be protected still.
