Dog sneezed out bordetella vaccine. Is he protected from kennel cough?

No - this vaccine is absorbed through the mucosal tissue in the mouth, so it "works" as soon as it's given and comes into contact with her gums and the inside of her cheeks. Vomiting after the fact will not affect its efficacy at all.

No, this is completely normal with intranasal vaccines. The entire volume doesn't need to stay inside her nose, it just needs to make contact with the nasal lining - most dogs immediately snort most of it back out. The vaccine will still be effective. Licking it will not hurt her at all.

Yes , it is possible that Theo can still get kennel cough, even though he was vaccinated. Kennel cough is a respiratory disease complex that can be caused by a large number of various bacteria and viruses. The vaccination only covers Bordetella bronchiseptica, which is the bacterium which is the main cause. So if your dog catches kennel cough he can still get infected with the other bacteria and viruses, but he will be immune against Bordetella. This then usually causes the kennel cough to be milder. Because Theo has a oozing eye I suggest you take him to the vet for an exam. If he has a fever as well and should he have an eye infection he will need antibiotics, If he has a bad cough your vet can also give him some cough medicine. Usually kennel cough is self-limiting and goes away within 3-4 weeks, but sometimes a dog needs medication to help it get over it.

The Bordatella vaccine is what we call "modified live" . This means that the actual virus is altered slightly to make it non-infectious, but still recognizable and stimulating to the immune system. If your dog is coughing, my suspicion is she contracted it based on exposure pre-vaccine. Generally this virus will run its' course within a month, but antibiotics can help prevent any secondary bacterial infections. A cough suppressant can also help keep her more comfortable.

Yes, kennel cough is very common and spreads very easily. Pets who receive the vaccine may still get kennel cough (just like people can still get the flu even though they had the vaccine), but they tend to get less sick IF they end up getting the infection. It is likely that the vaccine has caused some irritation in the nasopharyngeal area. This will likely resolve on its own. Hi Nadia. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Chances are Tortuga has kennel cough. The vaccine is not 100% protective (just like our flu vaccine) so even if a dog has been vaccinated they can still get kennel cough. The symptoms are usually milder and the course of the disease is shorter in dogs that have been vaccinated versus those that haven't so giving the vaccine is definitely warranted. I suggest you just monitor him for now since he seems to be acting normally. If the coughing gets worse or he starts showing other symptoms then get him to your vet for an exam: * ocular and/or nasal discharge * vomiting/gagging/retching * not eating * lethargy Of course, if you are worried you should take him to your vet for an exam now.
