I recommend having Tator seen by a vet to rule out the conditions above and receive appropriate treatment. In the meantime, I recommend limiting Tator’s activity so that he does not get stressed and using a harness rather than a collar for walks.

She is so cute! I am sorry to hear she has been coughing. That kind of cough you are describing makes me suspicious of kennel cough (even with the vaccine), although it is not the only cause. If she seems to have good energy and is otherwise normal you can give it some time to see if it resolves on its own, but if she seems to feel poorly or it is bothering her it would be safer to call your vet and discuss an appointment. Yes , it is possible that Theo can still get kennel cough, even though he was vaccinated. Kennel cough is a respiratory disease complex that can be caused by a large number of various bacteria and viruses. The vaccination only covers Bordetella bronchiseptica, which is the bacterium which is the main cause. So if your dog catches kennel cough he can still get infected with the other bacteria and viruses, but he will be immune against Bordetella. This then usually causes the kennel cough to be milder. Because Theo has a oozing eye I suggest you take him to the vet for an exam. If he has a fever as well and should he have an eye infection he will need antibiotics, If he has a bad cough your vet can also give him some cough medicine. Usually kennel cough is self-limiting and goes away within 3-4 weeks, but sometimes a dog needs medication to help it get over it.

It is most definitely bordetella. They can still get the disease even if vaccinated. It is kind of like our flu vaccine - you can still get the disease but usually the course of disease is shorter and the symptoms are more mild. Bordetella can progress into a pneumonia which is why we often treat dogs with antibiotics. If Gracie is still not well she needs to see a vet.

The cough can linger for a couple weeks. If he is otherwise acting normal than it may just take a little more time for the cough to resolve. If you notice any lethargy, anorexia, difficulty breathing, or fever than I he should definitely be rechecked.

I have seen some dogs break with very mild signs (sneezing, coughing) after being vaccinated with a bordetella vaccine. This is a very rare occurrence but can happen. Usually, these signs are self-limiting and resolve in a few days to one week. I would continue to monitor her and make sure that her signs resolve and do not worsen. One side effect of vaccines (although not common) is causing a very mild form of the disease. I have only seen this with bordetella vaccines and it is very rare based on how doses are given daily around the world.
