My dog is partially blind from smoke. What can I apply to her eyes?

Hello and thank you very much for your question. Unfortunately, there are no products over the counter that can treat cataracts. But, before you decide to do anything or put anything in the eyes, it is imperative that a veterinarian perform a complete ophthalmic examination on your dog. There are so many different conditions that can look like cataracts or cause blindness that are not cataracts. And the good news is that a lot of our diseases in a dog are completely treatable; even sometimes with over-the-counter drugs. So my first piece of advice is to go to a veterinarian and find out exactly what is causing your pets blindness. Thanks a lot for your question. I hope I have helped.

Should the eye ointment not make a difference in his loss of vision, I suggest you take Izzy back to the vet for a recheck. there are quite a few causes of blindness possible. Ask your vet about testing for tick diseases. we do sometimes see dogs with an ehrlichia canis infection that temporarily go blind. It also may be that she was slowly going blind over the past few years and now finally is totally blind and you just did not notice it before. THis is difficult, but dogs are great. They can get used to being blind easily, and have a few more senses with which they can "see".

It is hard to say what the cause it of the total blindness is without examining Ann first and doing an eye exam on her. Ann may have genetic or congenital disorder of the eye(s) that is causing the blindness, especially if she was blind in one eye already at a young age. If the eye was directly exposed to bleach (bleach on the eye causing a chemical burn of the eye), that could cause blindness. While fumes from bleach can be irritating to the eye, it is unlikely the fumes from the bleach would have caused blindness. I would strongly encourage that Ann see her veterinarian soon to confirm the blindness in the eyes with an ocular exam. After an eye exam and physical exam are done, causes of the blindness can be determined and diagnosed with your veterinarian. I hope this has helped and best of luck to you and Ann.

If an opthalmologist has evaluated Bella and reports that there is nothing to be done, then I suspect that Bella has something wrong with her retinas. My dog has progressive retinal atrophy and has been blind for a couple of years. I went to 2 opthalmologists just to make sure of the diagnosis, so you can certainly get another opinion from another ophthalmologist just to be sure. Unfortunately, we do not have any treatment for diseases of the retina, so we are left with a blind dog. Fortunately, blind dogs do great and can have a great quality of life. Depending on what is causing Chacha's vision loss (i.e. Cataracts, changes to the retina or changes to the cornea) there might be some things that you can do to treat the underlying problem but treatments would vary widely based on the diagnosis. I would recommend having your veterinarian examine Chacha's eyes to help determine what might be causing the cloudiness. If your veterinarian determines that there is not much to do for the vision loss you can make some changes to help her feel more confident. You should try to avoid moving things around the house so that Chacha can remember where furniture is located and avoid it. You should walk the same route every day. Hello, depending on what caused the purulent material on her eye, what you are seeing now may be consistent with scar tissue. Now, if she is having any discharge, if the normal white part of the eye (sclera) is red, or if she has bright red conjunctiva, then she should definitely be evaluated by a veterinarian. I would not recommend putting anything else into her eye until you have your veterinarian evaluate her. If she has an ulcer or an infection, putting the wrong medications in her eye may lead to a worsening condition and even the loss of her eye. I would definitely have her seen by your veterinarian if you are concerned she could be in pain or if you think her eye is not looking any better by tomorrow. Hope this helps and best of luck.

For that reason, it would be best to have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment if you are concerned. Otherwise, she may be ok.
