My dog has green discharge from her vulva after spay. Is this normal?

Hi ! If Holly is well in herself, eating bright passing normal feaces and urine, I would not worry. A little bit of vaginal discharge is expected folllowing the surgery and should gradually decrease and disappear. It can take sometimes a couple of weeks for it to settle completely. I'm sorry Piggy isn't doing well! The lump under her skin could be caused by a local inflammatory reaction to the vaccine, but it should have resolved by now. That is something that should be seen by the vet. I am very concerned that she has a greenish discharge coming from her vagina, and she could be suffering from a condition called a pyometra. If only her ovaries were removed during her spay, then the uterus remains and is still prone to developing an infection. She could also have a stump pyometra. This is when the remnants of the uterus become infected, and while it's not common, it is serious when it occurs. Finally, she could be suffering from vaginitis, an infection of the vagina. Homeopathic sepia will not treat any of these. If she still has her uterus, it will need to be removed and she will need antibiotics. A stump pyometra will also need to be treated surgically, and will require antibiotics. Vaginitis requires antibiotics. She should see a vet immediately to diagnose what is causing the green discharge so she can be treated. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.

Hello. How is Luna feeling overall? If she is playful & active, eating & drinking well, then she may just have a little vaginitis. Keep the area wiped clean with an antiseptic skin wipe & these are usually self-limiting. As for the eye discharge, it is possible that her corneas may have gotten a little dry during her surgery. You can flush the eyes with some artificial tears from your pharmacy, but if any redness develops in the sclera ( white part of the eye ) or any of the tissues around the eye redden or swell ( conjunctivitis ), please see your veterinarian for further diagnostics. Hello, sorry to hear about Willow. This could be associated with an infection or her vagina or lower reproductive tract. Rarely, dogs may develop an infection of her uterine stump which is left after spay surgery. She may require more diagnostics and medications to treat this infection. Your veterinarian may be able to offer further diagnostics including an abdominal ultrasound and bloodwork to rule out a stump pyometra. A cytology of her discharge could also confirm an infection. Hello, No, it is not normal for there to be any green residue in her genital region. My primary concern when seeing discharge like this is something called "pyometra". Pyometra is a serious uterine infection that happens in unspayed female dogs. It results in their uterus filling with pus and requiring an emergency hysterectomy (spay). Your mention of her abdomen appearing to change in size also concerns me that a swollen uterus could be causing this effect. I would recommend taking her in for a vet check as soon as possible. Vaginal discharge can be caused by a number of things. Both the urethra and vaginal openings exit the vaginal/vulvar area so discharge could indicate a problem with the urinary tract or with the reproductive tract. With any strange discharge, it is a good idea to schedule a veterinary appointment to check it out. If the discharge becomes cloudy, green or yellow in color, it is best to seek veterinary care as soon as possible as that may indicate something more serious such as a uterine infection (in unspayed females, but can occur if part of the uterine stump is left during a spay).

Discharge from this area can either be coming from the urinary tract (uti, etc ) or reproductive tract. Likely your vet will rule out uti first with a urinalysis and urine culture. A sterile vaginal exam may also be recommended. If persistent and not related to a uti then it may become important to make sure she was properly spayed.
