My female dog smells fishy and licks her vulva. What's the cause?

If the smell comes and goes, then it is most likely from the anal glands. Dogs have scent glands on either side of the anus that release a stinky liquid that commonly smells fishy. If she is scooting or licking excessively, then I would have your veterinarian check her anal glands to make sure that they are not overly full. However if the smell is coming from her urine, then I would be worried that she has a urinary tract infection and would recommend having your veterinarian examine a urine sample. Good luck! It sounds like Izzy may have a urinary tract infection. I would recommend taking her to see the vet and have a urine run to check for an infection. She may require antibiotics for it. Horrible odors are usually caused by bacterial infections. So when Macie licks her vulva, she is massaging secretions out which should be odorless. It appears she has a bacterial infection since there is a smell. She could be suffering from a vaginal infection or a UTI, Peeing in the house and straining are cardinal signs of a UTI.I suggest you take her to your vet for an exam. Bring fresh urine (you can catch it with a kitchen ladle) or do not take her out to pee before you go to the vet, as the vet will need urine to examine. I am sorry to hear about Stella! I would recommend that she sees her veterinarian for an examination. We can have dogs get infections of bacteria or yeast in the vulva area, but we can also see this symptom as a sign of a urinary tract infection or some urinary incontinence. Your vet can examine her and check for signs of infection, and based on their findings make a treatment plan. Your post states that your dog is spayed, if she was not spayed we would also be concerned about the chance of a pyometra, or infected uterus, which would need to be seen right away.

If she is leaking urine she also have have urinary incontinence. There are 2 medication options for urinary incontinence in female dogs: Proin or DES. I recommend making an appointment with your Vet today or tomorrow and bring a urine sample with you. If Polly has a UTI the Vet will likely prescribe antibiotics. Possible causes are: burning feeling from a UTI or crystals in her urine, impacted anal glands or skin issue or fleas on the back part of her. I would put her in the tub and rinse her off back there to see if it helps. If she is still agitated and crying then I would collect a urine sample and have her seen by a vet this morning. I would assume the small is from her anal glands I would recommend having a veterinarian express them to make sure they are not infected or impacted. If they are infected it can cause excess licking but not linked to urinary issues. If dogs are spayed very young they can get incontience issues. However I would highly recommend doing a urine culture first and making sure she is 100 percent healthy before starting incontience medications
