Why is my dog licking her vulva and leaking clear fluid when walking?

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 65 lbs

Stella has been licking her female area insesivly and leaking clear fluid when she walks and or lays down.

I am sorry to hear about Stella! I would recommend that she sees her veterinarian for an examination. We can have dogs get infections of bacteria or yeast in the vulva area, but we can also see this symptom as a sign of a urinary tract infection or some urinary incontinence. Your vet can examine her and check for signs of infection, and based on their findings make a treatment plan. Your post states that your dog is spayed, if she was not spayed we would also be concerned about the chance of a pyometra, or infected uterus, which would need to be seen right away.

A few possibilities that may be going on. There may be something that is waking her up at that time that isn’t waking you up. A train horn? A neighbor coming home? You may want to wake yourself up around 1:30 and see if anything is happening around 2. She may also be drinking more than normal so she may be having to urinate more often. Also you describe her licking her vulva more. I am suspicious that she may be leaking a bit of urine ( not uncommon I’m spayed females as the lower
Estrogen levels can lead to a weaker sphincter ).
She may be dribbling which causes her to lick, and it may bother her enough to cause her to get up and want to go outdoors. I would recommend putting a white sheet under her at bedtime to see if you can gather any “evidence “ of leaking. Best of luck and I hope these ideas help you solve the mystery! The vulva looks swollen indeed. Stevie may have vaginitis, which is not uncommon in young dogs. It is usually mild but irritating bacterial infection of vulva. The other explanation I can think of is a small wound or insect bite the triggered the itchiness and irritation and Stevie by continues licking the area, made it worse. First of all, you need to stop her from licking the vulva. Head cone would be ideal. If she doesn't tolerate a cone you could try a diaper, but a cone would be better. If the swelling does not go down or at least improve in the next 24hrs you will need to take Stevie to your local vets for a check up.

My spayed dog is licking her vulva. When should I take her to the vet?

Licking and biting excessively at the vulva is often a sign of a urinary tract infection, vaginitis, or certain types of allergies. Unfortunately, there is not much you can do at home to treat any of these problems effectively, so I would recommend taking her to the vet tomorrow for an exam if possible - she will probably need prescription antibiotics or other medication to treat the problem.

It sounds like Honey is in pain or has an infection. Since she is licking her vulva frequently and walking stiffly there is a possibility that she is suffering from a urinary tract infection or, especially since she was not spayed, a uterine infection, which is potentially life threatening. Please take her to your vet for an exam as a urinary tract infection can potentially turn into a serious kidney infection , and a uterine infection is potentially fatal. A UTI is usually treated with a course of antibiotics, and a uterine infection is usually treated by surgery, ie the pus-filled uterus and ovaries are removed and your dog will also be prescribed pain medicine and antibiotics.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Diesel. She will need to see her veterinarian. A urine test will likely be necessary to determine if she has a urinary tract infection. Your profile shows that she has been spayed. Vaginal discharge can be the sign of a uterine infection, but this would not be possible if she has been spayed. In the meantime, clean the area surrounding her vulva with some warm water. Once the skin is clean you can monitor for additional discharge. Do not allow her to lick as this can lead to inflamed or infected surrounding skin. I hope this information helps!

My female dog smells fishy and licks her vulva. What's the cause?

Even though Blossom's anal glands are empty she could be leaking anal gland material and that is what you are smelling or they could be infected. Having your Vet express them and see what the material is like may be helpful. The other possibility is a UTI, but they usually have increased urgency to urinate. She could also have an infection around the skin of her vulva. I would bring her and a urine sample to your vet to have those areas checked out. Good luck!
