My dog slipped, shaking, not eating or drinking. Should I see a vet?

I am very sorry to hear about your Basset. These symptoms are very concerning and I would recommend an examination as soon as possible, he needs to be seen today if at all possible. Without a physical examination and laboratory testing it is very difficult for us to determine what could be causing his symptoms. We would also worry about infections, liver or kidney disease, infiltrative intestinal disease, and more. The vet will likely recommend bloodwork and x-rays to determine what is causing your Bassett to be ill and help guide their treatment for him.

Dogs are very good at going along with pain without much complaining. Your dog is exhibiting Classic signs of discomfort. It may be joint pain/ arthritis or back pain. You should have assessed by your vet to see where the issue is and consider starting him on some kind of pain management .

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Jack! Jack is obviously painful! Beagles commonly get slipped disks in their backs and suffer from back and neck pain. The symptoms you are describing occur with back or neck pain. It is best to have Jack seen by a Vet. I treat back pain with strict rest, anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxants and pain medications. I would recommend taking Basil to see a veterinarian. Without a complete physical examination it is very difficult to say if it is time for Basil. The veterinarian can discuss with your friend if treatment or diagnostics is something that would help Basil or if something worse is going on with her that cannot be treated. They also don’t jump up in furniture like normal and avoid the stairs. They cry when touched, picked up or move. I would take him in to your vet today before the holiday for an exam. I treat neck and back pain with anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxants and pain medications. I wish Gage a speedy recovery!

Poor Misty, I understand this must be very concerning for you! I know you want to wait until tomorrow, and that could be absolutely fine and she may simply be taking a bit of an infection or general upset. However, with basset hounds and any sort of laboured breathing I always worry about a condition in their stomach called bloat or torsion, also referred to as GD or GDV. Unfortunately bassets are predisposed to this horrible condition and it is a medical emergency. I really hope this is not what is going on with Misty, but if it is she needs immediate treatment. You could watch her and see if she starts to settle, but if she is deteriorating​, becoming very lethargic, struggling to breathe or her belly is increasing in size I would go to the vet asap.

Hmm. That is odd. With no other symptoms besides the shaking, it is hard to say for sure. Shaking can be a sign of pain, neurological or an acid/base imbalance. I would continue monitor him for the next 12 hrs to see if this behavior continues. If it does then the next best step is to get some baseline bloodwork to look for underlying issues. You can also feel around to see if Snickers is painful in any particular area. That can help the vet focus on that one area to look for underlying causes. At this age most dogs also have arthritis, so it is a good idea to get Snickers on a daily joint supplement regardless.
