My dog won't eat, shakes, whines, and can't jump. Is he in pain?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Gage! I would worry that Gage has hurt his back or neck. This is how they tend to act. They also don’t jump up in furniture like normal and avoid the stairs. They cry when touched, picked up or move. I would take him in to your vet today before the holiday for an exam. I treat neck and back pain with anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxants and pain medications. I wish Gage a speedy recovery!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Billy. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian today. Some dogs, Beagles being one of them, are prone to neck and/or back pain. The muscle that lines the spine can spasm. This can be excruciatingly painful for the dog. Some dogs will move and cry out, bark or whine. They can be reluctant to do stairs or jump on/off furniture. Some are hesitant to walk and may stand with a hunched posture. This could be his problem or he may have a separate issue. The veterinarian will carefully examine him and determine how best to treat him. In the meantime, keep him quiet and do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. However, those signs are rather non-specific and while I agree with you that something is likely wrong with him, further work-up would be needed to know what is causing him to be unwell. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment. Likely diagnostics include bloodwork and radiographs if he appears to be in discomfort. It could still be pain associated with a leg even if nothing seems wrong with them. I recommend that you have Pari evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics include radiographs. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least they can prescribe pain control medications to make Pari feel better. In the meantime, reduce her activity as much as possible as that in itself can make a big difference. Good luck and have a good day!

Poor baby. It sounds like he may have injured something. It is common for them to injure their back or neck and act this way. I would have your vet look st him today. Your vet will be able to localize the pain and give him the appropriate pain meds to help him feel better. If it is his lower back, you vet may also prescribe him a stool softener so it is easier for him to have a bowel movement. Your vet will also be able to do X-rays if needed. I do not recommend to give any human pain meds as most of these are toxic to dogs. I hope this helps and he starts to feel better soon!

I'm sorry to hear that Charlie isn't feeling well. His behavior certainly doesn't normal for him. I would recommend that he sees his veterinarian. It is not uncommon for small breed dogs to experience back or neck pain. The pain can be intense. Sign in the dog are usually a reluctance to jump on furniture, refusal to do stairs, shaking and hesitant to move. In worst case scenarios, some dogs was will experience neurologic problems such as weakness or paralysis of the limbs. Charlie will need to see his veterinarian to know if this is what is causing his symptoms verses something else. In the meantime, keep him quiet and encourage him to eat and drink. (Other soft tissue and arthritis conditions are possible too.) Though it's probably not a true emergency, I would get him in to the vet as soon as possible for an evaluation and for some safe pain medication. I do NOT recommend any over the counter pain medications as they are neither safe, nor very effective in dogs. (Plus, some will interfere with the medication your vet will want to prescribe.). For now, keep Jagger kenneled or closely supervised and no running, jumping, wrestling, or stairs until you get him evaluated. If any more concerning signs arise (loss of appetite, tremors, seizures, dragging a back leg/legs, etc), head to the emergency vet immediately. Best wishes to you and Jagger.
