Why is my dog not moving, shivering, won't eat, and crying in pain?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Gage. He sounds quite sick based on the symptoms you have described. The shivering and reluctance to move typically indicate pain. He could be sore in his neck or back or in his abdomen. He may have an upset stomach, but I am worried that he is dehydrated as well from not eating and drinking. He will require medical care from his veterinarian to diagnose the problem and formulate a treatment plan. I do not recommend giving Pepto bismol. First, he sounds more sick than from a mild GI illness. I also do not find it to be very effective in dogs. Finally, it contains an aspirin like compound that can be very hard on a dog's stomach and intestines potentially making gastrointestinal signs worse. I hope this information helps!

Hello, The first thing that comes to my mind is chronic back, neck, or shoulder pain. Dogs with pain in these areas often hesitate to use stairs or jump on and off furniture. They may also want to lay around more and be generally less active. Pain in dogs can be similar to humans in that in can be caused by things like arthritis, disc disease, or a pinched nerve. It can also flare up and be worse at some times than at others, which may be why he vocalizes at some times and not at others. Anti-inflammatory drugs (a common one is carprofen) and nerve pain drugs (a common one is gabapentin) are commonly used to treat these conditions. Poor baby. It sounds like he may have injured something. It is common for them to injure their back or neck and act this way. I would have your vet look st him today. Your vet will be able to localize the pain and give him the appropriate pain meds to help him feel better. If it is his lower back, you vet may also prescribe him a stool softener so it is easier for him to have a bowel movement. Your vet will also be able to do X-rays if needed. I do not recommend to give any human pain meds as most of these are toxic to dogs. I hope this helps and he starts to feel better soon!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Jack! Jack is obviously painful! Beagles commonly get slipped disks in their backs and suffer from back and neck pain. The symptoms you are describing occur with back or neck pain. It is best to have Jack seen by a Vet. I treat back pain with strict rest, anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxants and pain medications. I do not recommend starting human medications as they might interfere with your vet's choice of medications. I hope this helps and I wish Jack the best!

Hi! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Thanks for the pictures! Gino's testicles look normal to me. I don't see any evidence of skin disease. I don't think he is shaking because of his testicles or penis. I am worried about him with the constant shaking and now not eating and bloody diarrhea. Causes of bloody diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, toxin ingestion, metabolic conditions like liver/kidney disease or Addison's disease, pancreatitis, dietary indiscretion, food allergy/intolerance. You can start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 days of normal stool. Gino sounds like he is significantly painful: he could have joint disease, Lyme disease, panosteitis or other growing disease. He REALLY needs to see a Vet at least for an exam. You can ask for a financial estimate before agreeing to tests and medications. With out examining him myself I can't tell you exactly what is wrong. I hope this helps and I wish Gino the best~!

There are a wide variety of health problems that can cause shaking/crying and decreased appetite. Pain or discomfort from a number of health problems could cause the shaking and crying. Decreased appetite may be due to pain or can be due to nausea from any number of health issues such as orthopedic conditions, organ dysfunction, infections, autoimmune diseases, toxins, or certain types of cancers. Due to the variety of possibilities in this case, I would highly recommend Fido be seen by his veterinarian right away for an evaluation. He may need blood work and/or x-rays to help determine a cause so he can get appropriately treated. I hope this helps and best of luck to you and Fido!

This sounds like he has bad back or hip pain. He needs veterinary attention right away. They will prescribe pain medication and may do X-rays to determine if he has hip or spinal arthritis. With treatment he should improve if he was fine before. Sometimes back or arthritis pain is worse after a lot of activity, or from being confined and not being able to move around.
