Why do my dogs have slimy poop, and one has smelly pee and won't eat?

Since Dodger has diarrhea and is on the road to recovery I think you are ok. If the mucous and/or diarrhea persists I’d bring him the vet for metronidazole. I wish Dodger a speedy recovery!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Cinnabunz! If she is not eating then she will not make any stool. I am most concerned about the poor appetite. If this is not normal for her then that needs to be our biggest concern. I worry that maybe the slime or mucous you are seeing in her urine is actually coming from her vulva and not her urine. Since she is not spayed, every time she is sick we are going to be concerned about an infected uterus (pyometra) which is life threatening. Intact female dogs can also get hydro or mucometras. I would bring a urine sample with you to an appointment with your Vet. At least do an exam, check her urine and blood work. If the Vet is also suspicious for uterine disease an X-ray is needed. Yes, probably a bout of colitis. I would not be overly worried. Just do as you normally do by withholding food for a 6-8 hours. The only other thing I would suggest is a 30 day course of a probiotic. You can use any probiotic made for dogs but I recommend Fortiflora. One packet on food daily. It is very palatable so dogs usually eat with no problem. I think that if this continues, Zekie should be evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They may be able to look into this so that it can be treated. Further diagnostics would include general labwork and abdominal imaging. You can try giving him a bland diet such as one composed mainly of boiled chicken and white rice to entice his appetite. I recommend getting her pee checked for infection and stones. Bad smelling feces can mean food allergies, disoders in absorption, a problem with the exocrine pancreas, or just poor quality food. Try changing the food to something higher quality. Also, avoid any raw meat or bones in her meals as this causes many GI issues and makes smellier poop. Best of luck with Naughty!

Hi there! Although dogs can get diarrhea from worms, there are other reasons why, including bacterial infections, or even dietary indiscretion (eating something out of the ordinary that they shouldn't), that can cause it. From the description of the mucous, it could very well be colitis - or inflammation of the colon or large bowel. Also, fleas carry tapeworms, so sometimes the over the counter de-wormers don't take care of those. You can try a fast of 12 hours of no food, and very little water. After that period of time, 1/3-1/2 of their normal portion of food in the form of boiled or steamed lean protein such as chicken breast or ground turkey (no sauce or seasoninng) can be introduced. If the diarrhea seems like it's improving, or it stops, every 12 hours you can increase the portion little by little until it's back to the normal portion of food. If the diarrhea is not improving, both dogs should be evaluated by their veterinarian. It is important to make sure that the dogs are not getting too dehydrated from the diarrhea (as even though they may be drinking, they lose way more fluid than they can take in sometimes with diarrhea). The veterinarian can also give them some medications to help with the diarrhea, like, for example, some antibiotics to help re-balance the bacterial populations in the gut. At any time, if vomiting starts in addition to the diarrhea, I always advise to have the pet(s) evaluated immediately, because this can indicate an intestinal blockage, or a severe gastrointestinal infection or diffuse inflammation. All of those issues need to be addressed immediately. If the diarrhea does improve with the bland diet, I always advise to feed it until there is 48-72 hours of normal, solid stools. Then, you can transition the dogs back to their normal diet, gradually, over the course of 5-7 days (as switching too quickly can actually cause diarrhea).
