My dog has slimy poop. Is it a colitis flare-up? What should I do?

Poor guy. It sounds like your pet Shiro has a bout of colitis (inflammation of the colon) which can often be caused by intestinal parasites. I would highly recommend having him seen by your vet soon for a fecal exam and medications to help resolve his colitis. Only antibiotics can help resolve this in most cases, which has to be prescribed by your vet. Until you can get him seen you can start a probiotic with him, such as Culturelle over the counter or Fortiflora. This can help with some of the inflammation by restoring the good intestinal flora. It is probably stress colitis. I suggest you give him one dose of Immodium (loperamide) if you can find it there. JUST ONE DOSE - no more; one 2mg tablet. Next, withhold all food for 8 hours to let his intestines rest. Nothing. Water is fine to have available at all times. After 8 hours, you can start feeding him small amounts of his regular food every few hours (instead of one or two larger meals he gets). Finally, if you can, get him a probiotic I would feed him that for the next 2 weeks minimum. It must be one made for dogs. No human products. Hope this helps. You can use it for 1-2 weeks to see if it makes a difference. If it does not, you can consider switching to a sensitive stomach type diet. If no improvement, have her evaluated by your veterinarian so that the stools can be assessed. If she develops diarrhea at any point before then at that point she should definitely be evaluated by her veterinarian. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Drake and Pierce! The slimy poop can indicate diarrhea and mucous can make it look slimy. Mucous can indicate inflammation in the colon. Causes of diarrhea in both dogs likely indicated a viral or bacterial infection or they both ate something that is disagreeing with them like a new food, treat or table food or they got in to something. Diarrhea can cause a poor appetite if they don't feel well. If they are having a lot of bowel movements you can consider fasting them for 12-24 hours to rest the GI tract. Then restart feeding as a bland diet of boiled chicken or beef with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. If Drake continues to not eat well, or stops eating he should be seen by your Vet. As for Drakes' urine smell-It could smell stronger because it is more concentrated due to dehydration or he could have an infection. I feel sometimes intact male dog urine smells stronger.
