My healthy 2-year-old Pomeranian sleeps a lot. Is that normal?

Hello. This is a very difficult situation to answer in this type forum. There are many questions that need to be answered as well as a good physical exam to determine if something is indeed wrong with Anna. I would say that if she is reluctant to interact & engage with you or your family when there is a fair amount of activity in the house, then yes, this would be quite abnormal for a relatively young dog. So, if you think her sleeping is abnormal, it is very important to have her examined by your veterinarian to rule out disease, infection, anemia, low thyroid function, neurologic dysfunction or anything else that may be responsible for her low energy & excessive sleeping. Hello. Puppies do sleep a lot. As long as Sky has periods of activity & is eating well, at least 3 times a day, & has regular eliminations, no diarrhea, then he is not probably overtly ill. But if he is suddenly acting sleepy when he was a more active pup, then this is not normal & he probably needs to be evaluated by your veterinarian. Hello. It certainly is possible that this is normal for Chi. If her eating/drinking habits have not changed, she seems well, no coughing or problems eliminating, then I would not be too concerned. Hi there and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes, sleeping frequently during the day is not uncommon for puppies less than 8 weeks old. Puppies need a lot of sleep just like human babies do and will change as Sugar gets older. As long as Sugar is normal otherwise (is eating and drinking normally, has normal stool and urine, etc), I wouldn't worry too much. I hope this helps!

If he is eating and drinking well, with no vomiting or diarrhea, then it does not sound abnormal. Some dogs are just more energetic than others However, if this behavior is new, then I would consult your vet for testing. If their thyroid is low then it can lead to lethargy and may be contributing.

In terms of the appetite, this is sometimes not uncommon in puppies when they are in their new environment. I recommend that you continue to monitor him for now, especially if you just got him. If these symptoms of not eating well and sleeping a large portion of the day do not improve, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment. If she is otherwise fine, I would not be too concerned about this. However, if she develops any other symptoms like decreased appetite or vomiting, have her evaluated then. Good luck!
