My dog has a skin bump. Is it a bug bite? Does he need a vet or meds?

This type of bump is known as a pustule. This may be due to a bug bite (not possible to identify the type of bug from this), but is more likely a boil, or ingrown hair. These usually don't get much worse and often resolve on their own, so no need to worry right now. I recommend cleaning the area medicated wipe (can get this at the pet store) twice a day until the bump is gone. If it seems to get worse, then you'll want to take Mazzarella into the vet for an exam. I hope that helps and all is well with Mozzarella.

Hello, Thanks for the good picture. I agree that it does look like a solitary pimple, very well could be from an insect sting initially. I would just monitor this for now. If it spreads into many pimples, a larger sore, or an itchy rash, those would be reasons to have him seen by his veterinarian to ensure he doesn't have a skin infection that requires treatment. You can use a warm compress with saline or epsom salt water on the area for a few minutes twice per day. Otherwise, don't apply any ointments and just let it stay dry and open to air. Hello, thank you for your question about Buddy. Based on the photos that you have attached I think that it is very possible that this lesion could be a bug/spider bite. It is also possible that Buddy was exposed to something irritating to his skin. If he is not bothered at the area and it does not seem very painful I would recommend continuing to monitor him. If the lesion progresses or he develops any additional symptoms I would have Buddy evaluated by your veterinarian. Hope this helps, good luck!

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Those bumps do not look like a bug bite reaction as but bite reactions are usually haired swellings in the skin. I would be worried that these are an infection or masses of a different type (benign (non-cancerous) masses or more concerningly a cancerous mass). If they popped up quickly then they are more likely infection. I would recommend not giving Benedryl, putting an e-collar on Kelso so that he can't scratch them open, and get him to a vet as soon as possible for testing and medications. Best of luck with Kelso.

As long as Chief is not showing any other symptoms such as lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, etc. then I would just monitor this for now and see if these go down on their own. If this were my pet I would monitor this first to see if it goes away. It is hard to say if this is a bug bite because of all the hair and no close up to see if there is a small bite wound. You can check it yourself to see if you notice a small hole there, and then you have your answer. However, if you are unsure or can't find a hole, then its ok to wait and monitor this to see if it decreases in size and resolves on its own within the next 1-2 weeks. As long as it isn't causing any discomfort to Phoebe, then I wouldn't rush her in just yet. You can apply a very small amount of Neosporin to the area also. If it does not reduce in size or resolve within 1-2 weeks, then it should be checked by your vet to gather samples from the growth so that it can be properly classified.
