Puppy has a pimple-like bump on tummy. Is it serious? When to see vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 13 days old | 25 lbs

My 9 week old Bernedoodle (male) has what looks like a pimple on his tummy? Is it a mosquito bite? Is this just something we should monitor or should we take him in?

Thanks for the good picture. I agree that it does look like a solitary pimple, very well could be from an insect sting initially. I would just monitor this for now. If it spreads into many pimples, a larger sore, or an itchy rash, those would be reasons to have him seen by his veterinarian to ensure he doesn't have a skin infection that requires treatment. You can use a warm compress with saline or epsom salt water on the area for a few minutes twice per day. Otherwise, don't apply any ointments and just let it stay dry and open to air.

Was there supposed to be a picture attached to this? Puppies tend to get skin infections pretty commonly. We even refer to it as “puppy pyoderma”. If it just looks like a pimple then that is likely what it is. If it is much larger or if there are several on the body then he should be evaluated by a veterinarian to determine if he needs antibiotics. Otherwise bathing in an antimicrobial shampoo such as chlorhexidine or salicylic acid can be helpful. These can be found in the dandruff section of any human shampoo aisle. This could be a condition known as puppy pyoderma. It's roughly the equivalent of acne in adolescent humans. It usually clears up as your puppy gets older and there isn't any treatment needed unless it gets really bad. If so, get him in to see your vet and they can prescribe antibiotics and topical treatment as needed. You can bathe him with a mild, oatmeal-based shampoo for dogs and lukewarm water to help clear the rash and soothe his skin.

My dog has a bump. How do I know if it's a sore or a pimple?

The area in the picture looks like an area of what I would call excoriation or skin irritation usually seen when a dog scratches an area extensively due to itching. The yellowish area can be a pimple or what we call a pustule (a pimple containing pus). Pimples and pustules are usually raised lesions, extending up from the skin. It's a little difficult making out much detail in the picture. Sometimes damaged areas of skin turn yellowish like that and are usually flat in appearance, not raised up like a pimple/pustule. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Harley. I do recommend that he sees a veterinarian. That is a larger bump than the average pustule or pimple. He could have a small mass that is growing or an infection under the skin. This time of year, insect bites are common as well. His veterinarian will evaluate the bump and may collect a sample of cells to evaluate under the microscope. I hope this information helps!

This could be a pimple, insect bite or viral papilloma. My dog has a bleeding purple-red lump on his stomach. What to do?

The picture you posted does not look like a pimple, so I am worried that it is actually a mass. Anytime a new mass is noticed, I always recommend having it evaluated to see what it is and if anything needs to be done about it. Unfortunately, we often can't tell anything about a mass by just looking at it. Your vet can perform a simple test called a fine needle aspirate where they use a small needle to collect some cells from the mass, then look at them under the microscope. They may even need to send the cells to the lab for a pathologist to examine them, so we know what the mass is. If it is benign, you might not need to do anything about the mass at all, but if they see cells that worry them, they might recommend removing the mass. If the area is infected, then your veterinarian may prescribe oral or injectible antibiotics to resolve it. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. My puppy has a puss-filled bump on its tummy. What should I do?

Hi there! I'm so sorry to read about Choco's troubles. It looks like he has a pustule. This is basically a pimple-like lesion caused very often by a staph infection. Sometimes the lesions are singular, or sometimes they can spread and get worse. If I have dog come in to see me with pustules, I will often prescribe a medicated shampoo to help clean the skin and also moisturize it. Dry skin can cause a break in the skin barrier and allow bacteria to congregate. I also will often times prescribe a course of oral antibiotics, to insure that the infection doesn't spread, and goes away quickly. I would monitor the lesion, and make an appointment to see Choco's veterinarian. They can evaluate Choco's skin and make sure there is nothing else going on, and see if the infection is severe enough for topical and oral medications. I hope you find this answer helpful!
