Dog has a pus-filled bump on inner thigh. Is it a bug bite or boil?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 3 years and 2 months old | 30 lbs

I just saw a singular bug bite on my dog’s inner thigh. I am careful to check for ticks whenever we get home from walks, but unsure if this could be a bite from a tick or some other bug. The bite also has a little pus I’m guessing where the bug bit, that almost looks like a pimple. Any idea of what bug it could be?

This type of bump is known as a pustule. This may be due to a bug bite (not possible to identify the type of bug from this), but is more likely a boil, or ingrown hair.

These usually don't get much worse and often resolve on their own, so no need to worry right now. I recommend cleaning the area medicated wipe (can get this at the pet store) twice a day until the bump is gone. If it seems to get worse, then you'll want to take Mazzarella into the vet for an exam.

I hope that helps and all is well with Mozzarella.
