My dog is sick after hospital. When will he feel better and eat?

Poor Snickers! He's so cute and I'm sorry he's so ill. You did the right thing by taking him into the vet yesterday. It's a small improvement that he has eaten something and drank some water, and the IV fluids he got likely helped with any dehydration. When a dog is very sick, it can take a couple of days for them to regain their appetite. I would continue monitoring him very closely, and if he starts vomiting food and water again, stops eating, and/or stops drinking water, I would rush him back into a vet right away. At that point, I'd recommend further tests such as an x-ray to rule out a foreign body obstruction. Keep offering him boiled chicken and water. I would suspect that his lack of appetite is related to his recent episode of vomiting and blood in stool. There can be many different causes of this, so it's important to have him re-evaluated by a vet and treated again. He can go a couple of days without eating, but I would be more concerned if he was not drinking, had bloody stool, or vomit, or was acting very depressed/lethargic. If you are noticing these problems too, then it's best to have him seen by a vet within 24 hours. I see that you are in a rural area, but there may be a vet available in Wichita. If not, then there would definitely be vets available in Manhattan where the KSU vet school is. They have a great vet hospital there with many specialists on staff, so you may consider going there if you are not getting a good diagnosis, or resolution of his current problems. Unfortunately, I don't think there are any more ways to get him to eat at this time. It looks like you've offered some tasty food, so if he's not eating that, then he probably won't eat anything. Also, you can get more stomach/intestinal upset if you feed too rich of food at this time, so it's really best to have him seen by a vet before trying other food options. The bilirubin is a bit high, as is the ALP (alkaline phosphatase) but neither of these values is super specific in terms of what the cause or the best treatment is. We can see the ALP be elevated with stress, age, and sometimes even normal cell regeneration within the liver. The bilirubin can be slightly elevated when the blood sample is what we call "hemolyzed," which can sometimes happen when blood is spun down for a blood test to be run. Therefore, if he is still showing symptoms of illness, I would echo what Dr Ana said; it may be time to consider imaging. Either X-rays or an abdominal ultrasound maybe helpful in identifying the problem and therefore identifying the best way to treat it. Take him back to the vet if he's still having troubles, as he probably is in need of some more fluids as well. It sounds like their treatment didn’t resolve the symptoms. Things like pancreatitis or GI obstruction won’t show up on routine blood work, so I would recommend calling the vet today for what needs to happens next. If an obstruction is one of the vet’s concerns, they may recommend x-rays or ultrasound. If pancreatitis is a concern, then usually they need to go on IV fluids for a day or two.

You can keep him on a bland diet such as the boiled chicken and white rice, cottage cheese, or just plain white rice. I would wait for the blood test results before trying any other diet and or treatments. His signs could be due to an infection, parasites, kidney and/or liver issues, pancreatitis, and rarely endocrine disease.

I'm sorry Buddy has been ill! Vomiting and diarrhea can definitely take a lot out of them, so it's a good sign that he's eating. I would expect that he should gradually feel better over the next couple of days if he's eating and drinking consistently. If at that point he's still not acting right I would have your vet recheck him. They may want check lab work to ensure nothing else is going on. Good luck!

I am sorry to hear that Wyatt is so ill. He needs to have some tests ran by your vet to determine his underlying illness right away so that we know what he needs to get well again. He may have a stomach ulcer, really upset stomach from something he ate, a foreign body obstruction, infection or any number of organ malfunctions. I would recommend fasting him for now to prevent any more vomiting episodes and offering him only small amounts of Pedialyte non flavored to keep him as hydrated as possible. You can offer him a liquid diet (Ensure or pet formulated one from your local pet store) to see if he will keep that down until you can get him in to your vet on tomorrow. Hopefully they can diagnose the underlying problem and get him proper treatment right away. I hope Wyatt is able to make a full and speedy recovery. Best wishes and take care.
