Dog recovering from vomiting & diarrhea. How long until he's normal?

There are many reasons why dogs develop diarrhea. Some of these reasons are that they are something they shouldn't like trash, fatty foods, or possibly ate something that isn't food at all, such as a piece of a toy, stick, or stone. A dog may also develop diarrhea from parasites, ingesting a toxin, or some sort of infectious disease, among many other possibilities. My general cutoff if a dog is eating and drinking well and acting normally is 36 hours without the diarrhea resolving likely warrants a trip to the veterinarian. Your vet will examine Natty Boh and may recommend abdominal radiographs and possibly some bloodwork. The vet may prescribe an antidiarrhea medication and because diarrhea can lead to dehydration, they may offer to give her some fluids either under her skin (subcutaneously or in an IV). Until you can get Natty Boh to the veterinarian I would recommend making sure she is drinking well. You can also try a bland diet of plain boiled boneless skinless chicken breast and white rice to help settle her GI tract until she can be examined by her vet. I hope this was helpful!

I am happy sunny is feeling a little better. It can be normal for dogs not to defecate multiple days after diarrhea. The GI system has to build up the feces for them to defecate. IF he is eating,drinking and acting normal I would not be concerned. IF he is lethargic and still vomiting I would take him back to the vet for additional testing like blood work and x-rays. IF you are adding water into his food it is likely he will not drink additional water

Vomiting and diarrhea can occur as a result of a virus, parasites, stomach upset from eating different foods or treats, among other health conditions. If he is acting normally and still able to keep water down, you can try monitoring him at home first by withholding food for 12-24 hours. After that time, offer a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for a few days, then gradually transition back to his normal diet over another 5-7 days. However, if Buster's vomiting or diarrhea worsen, or if he becomes lethargic and stops drinking, a trip to the vet will be in order to assure that he has not become dehydrated and to get to the bottom of the problem. I'm sorry to hear that Henry is not feeling well! It's hard to see your pet sick! It's great that you're seeing improvement in Henry's energy level and that he has stopped vomiting. It can take several days for the diarrhea to resolve. Continuing to feed a bland diet may help and finishing out the course of metronidazole is always recommended. If Henry's diarrhea persists even after the metronidazole is finished or if you feel he is getting worse again, I would recommend having your veterinarian exam Henry again to determine what might be going on.

It can take a couple of days for Aja to return to normal. It's good that she hasn't thrown up or had diarrhea in 12 hours. It's also good that she is nibbling at her food and drinks water. Continue to monitor her.

It's difficult for me to say how much longer it will be until Beau is home without knowing his diagnosis. It is definitely great that he is eating, but it is likely that he is no longer vomiting because he is on anti-nausea medication. His discharge from the hospital depends on his overall condition, as well as certain factors as his blood work normalizing and hydration. Your vet will be able to give you a more accurate prognosis, but in my practice, I typically like to see that blood work is returning to normal and that the dog is fully hydrated and eating on his own before being discharged.

Hello, sorry to hear about Ronan. Yes, you should continue a bland diet for 3-5 days total. If his diarrhea is not improving, or if he develops blood in his diarrhea then he should be seen by a veterinarian as anti-diarrhea medications may be recommended. Common causes of this is often some form of dietary indiscretion but other causes may include a parasitic infection or inflammation of his GI tract. If Ronan is not improving then have him evaluated by his veterinaian sooner. Hope this helps and best of luck.
