Why is my dog so sick after anesthesia-free dental cleaning?

I'm so sorry this happened. It is not likely an overdose of anesthetic. If that was the case he would have passed away during the dental procedure. It is more likely that he threw a blood clot post-anesthesia. The only way to know for sure would be to have a necropsy (autopsy) done on him.

If Cooper had general anesthesia for a dental cleaning it could take 24 hours or more to recover from anesthesia. He may have been given different medications than in the past. The trachea and back of the throat can be irritated by the endotracheal tube and cause coughing or reverse sneezing. I would recommend calling the veterinarian who performed the procedure and expressing your concerns. If they are not open and you feel Cooper is in distress, having difficulty breathing, or in pain I'd recommend seeing an emergency veterinarian.

Poor Blue! The anaesthetic combined with the pain of the teeth clean can really upset their tummies. You could try feeding a diet of plain chicken and rice for a few days, but I'd urge you to give your vet a call. They shluld be able to prescribe you a gastroprotectant liquid that can help settle the tummy. If the diarrohea dies not settle it will need to be treated too.

This is a very unusual case to have ongoing problems after the diarrhea is resolved. Sedation and anesthetic does result in all over body relaxation and chiropractic care and acupuncture can be very helpful in resolving any nerve control issues in such cases. A fiber and probiotic supplement such as fortiflora would also be recommended

Yes. I would definitely take him to an emergency clinic immediately. Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis can come on very quickly and dogs can become very sick in a few hours. I'm sorry to hear that your dog is having this problem! No, having him put under anesthesia for his teeth cleaning would not have anything to do with causing diabetes. If he's vomiting again, I would recommend taking him back to your vet right away for a recheck - diabetic dogs can develop a serious, life-threatening complication called diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) if they are vomiting and not eating, so it's very important to find out what is causing the vomiting and have him treated as soon as possible.

It depends quite a bit on what drugs and doses were used for anesthesia, so unfortunately it's difficult to give a good answer to this question without being able to look at his medical record. But in general, for most anesthetic procedures, it's not uncommon for many dogs to remain somewhat groggy or drowsy for up to 12 hours or so afterwards - my rule of thumb for owners at our clinic is that their pet should be acting normal again by the following morning, but not to worry overly much if they are a bit sleepy or "off" for the rest of the afternoon or evening after going home. However, the pet should be able to get up and walk around, eat and drink without problems, etc. - if they are groggy to the point of being unresponsive or unable to stand, this is not normal. If you are concerned about Falkor, the safest course of action would be to call your vet's office and describe how he is currently acting - they should be able to tell you if this is reasonable, based on their anesthesia protocol. If he is unresponsive, having difficulty swallowing, or seems to be getting worse over time, I would take him back to your vet or your nearest emergency clinic to be checked.
