Dog has gas and diarrhea after dental cleaning, what can I do?

This is a very unusual case to have ongoing problems after the diarrhea is resolved. Sedation and anesthetic does result in all over body relaxation and chiropractic care and acupuncture can be very helpful in resolving any nerve control issues in such cases. A fiber and probiotic supplement such as fortiflora would also be recommended

I am glad to hear she seems to be feeling well. Occasionally, the Gi tract will have a mild temporary change during/after anesthesia which can result in the changes in the stool that you saw. I would recommend that you feed her a bland diet (boiled chicken and white rice) for the next couple of days. Unfortunately, bloody diarrhea often does not respond to at home treatment and may require a trip to your veterinarian. Since your veterinarian is likely closed today, you can certainly try a bland diet of 1/2 cooked white rice and 1/2 cooked white meat chicken (no skin or bones). If the bloody diarrhea continues with this diet, I would contact your veterinarian tomorrow. If Gumbo becomes lethargic, does not want to eat or the bloody diarrhea worsens, I would have him evaluated today. Good luck! Violet's diarrhea is probably from the recent change in food and possibly the antibiotics she was on. For some dogs canned food is too rich and is difficult for them to digest. If she will only eat canned food you could consider feeding her a low residue prescription diet (Hill's i/d, Royal Canin GI low fat). You can purchase these from your vet. Since Violet has been having diarrhea for a longer period of time she may have an imbalance of the normal bacteria in her gut. When this happens dogs usually need antibiotics and probiotics to help get everything back in balance. And finally, I always recommend having a fecal performed in cases of diarrhea to rule out intestinal parasites. I hope this helps. Best of luck.

Hi, was the dental gel for dogs ? I doubt the diarrhoea was caused by it as the timeframe between the gel ingestion and diarrhoea is too small. It is more likely that Chi has picked up a virus or a bug that cause gastro-enteritis. Try to offer a bland diet and you could offer some probiotics.

This is not uncommon following new and rich foods and generally will settle down within 3-5days. A probiotic/fiber supplement such as fortiflora alongside a bland diet may help rebalance the gut and monitor closely for any persistent vomiting which may indicate the need for a vet visit and additional treatment

I'm sorry to hear that Hammer is not feeling well. Dental cleanings are typically performed under anesthesia in petd because they can be uncomfortable and sharp objects are used to remove tartar in the mouth. Depending on the level of dental disease, it is possible that the dental cleaning was uncomfortable for him and could cause a great deal of stress if significant restraint was required. Stress can cause stomach upset including bloody diarrhea. Given the severity of his signs, I am glad that you had him seen by veterinarian. If he does not improve with the prescribed treatment, I would recommend scheduling a recheck examination. I would also recommend checking with your veterinarian about ways to manage dental health in the future.
