Could teeth cleaning anesthesia cause my dog's diabetes and vomiting?

If you are sure it is her teeth, have her examined by your veterinarian. Periodontal disease can lead to systemic disease, bad breath or tooth loss if left untreated. If she has any degree of periodontal disease, she will require anesthesia for a dental cleaning and any periodontal treatment. Your vet should perform a complete exam and blood work to confirm your dog is a good anesthetic candidate. Periodontal disease typically does not present as you describe so a visit to your vet is highly recommended. The GI upset can be managed by withholding food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet (1:1 ratio of plain boiled boneless chicken and plain white rice). Feed in small, frequent amounts waiting at least one hour between feedings. If the vomiting stops, transition slowly to the regular diet. If not, see your veterinarian.

I'm so sorry this happened. It is not likely an overdose of anesthetic. If that was the case he would have passed away during the dental procedure. It is more likely that he threw a blood clot post-anesthesia. The only way to know for sure would be to have a necropsy (autopsy) done on him.

I'm sorry to hear that Hammer is not feeling well. Dental cleanings are typically performed under anesthesia in petd because they can be uncomfortable and sharp objects are used to remove tartar in the mouth. Depending on the level of dental disease, it is possible that the dental cleaning was uncomfortable for him and could cause a great deal of stress if significant restraint was required. Stress can cause stomach upset including bloody diarrhea. Given the severity of his signs, I am glad that you had him seen by veterinarian. If he does not improve with the prescribed treatment, I would recommend scheduling a recheck examination. I would also recommend checking with your veterinarian about ways to manage dental health in the future.

Vomiting can be a sign of elevated glucose levels. If your pet has skipped an insulin treatment then this can very well be the reason why she is now sick. It is best to feed her a meal and get her back on her insulin regimen as soon as possible to avoid prolonged high sugar levels that will continue to make her ill. If she is also refraining from eating and continues to act ill, then it is best to get her seen by a vet right away because she may be ketoacidotic (high level of ketones in the body due to excessively high sugar levels in the bloodstream) and in need of emergency treatment to help stabilize her.

Poor Charlie! I'm sorry to hear that he's having this problem. Diabetes is not a progressive disease, so a well-controlled dog can live many years with a good quality of life if no complications occur. Vomiting daily is not a normal part of diabetes, so I would be concerned that something else may be going on. This problem may be very treatable, so I would recommend taking him back to your veterinarian for an exam. He/she can do blood work or other testing if needed to help determine what is causing the vomiting and get him started on appropriate treatment depending on what is found.

Poor Kobe! First a fight, and now vomiting, its been a rough week for him! I'm wondering if he may be sensitive to either the antibiotic or pain relief medicine that he's been on since the surgery? Some dogs can have vomiting or diarrhea due to these medicines. It may be worth calling his vet to check, as they might choose to switch him on to a different medicine instead. Loss of appetite and vomiting can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. While the dental disease may be related to her not eating well, I do not expect that to be related to the vomiting. I recommend that you have Cowlee evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and others depending on the findings on exam.
