Why is my dog shivering after puppies? Could it be a nutrient issue?

Usually small breed dogs require to be fed throughout the day every 6 hours or so. However, this could also be due to something else like a toxicity of some kind. While shivering can be normal occasionally it can also be a sign of pain or fever. It could also be seen with a low calcium level. I’d recommend having your vet take a look at Cocoa - they can take her temperature and determine if she seems painful. Some blood can be normal for awhile but they can also look at the discharge from her vulva and make sure there are no signs of infection. They might recommend some blood work.

Young dogs, especially small breed dogs can have dangerously low blood glucose levels. If you have karo syrup the dab some on his tongue and get him to an emergency clinic as soon as possible. There could be a couple of reasons why Rosie is shivering. Shivering could be caused by pain, fever, anxiety, or nervousness. Given she recently saw the vet and had had no problems, I would suspect nervousness might be the cause. She's new to your home, and that is a stressful adjustment. As long as she is eating and drinking normally, going to the bathroom normally, and otherwise acting normal, I would not be too concerned about it. I hope this helps!

She needs to continue to eat puppy food which is high in calories and will help keep her from becoming hypocalcemic. She should not need supplemental calcium unless the vet has currently diagnosed her with hypocalcemia. She may be shaking because she is in discomfort from her recent labor. Keep an eye on her for the next 24 hrs and if the shaking continues you may want to give the calcium you got from your vet the last time she had an episode just to hold her over until she can be seen to make sure low calcium is truly the issue here. I am sorry to hear about your pug puppy. I would recommend bringing him to a veterinarian for evaluation. When I hear of a puppy having this type of sign after a meal (if it is repeated, not just one isolated incident) I worry about a portosystemic liver shunt which you can read at here https://www.vin.com/veterinarypartner/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4952622. If the shivering is just random or didn't recur it could be due to being cold, being scared or in pain, or a neurological issue. An exam is recommended if the shivering continues to help ascertain if the dog has a medical problem.

I'm sorry to hear that your pup isn't doing well. I recommend taking him to an emergency clinic right away for evaluation. His blood sugar could be low, he could have a liver issue that is allowing toxins to build up in his system, he could have a congenital issue with his digestive tract, or something else entirely. His vet will likely do an exam, draw a bit of blood, and maybe take x-rays. I hope he's feeling better soon!
