My dog sheds a lot and pees inside. Is this a medical issue?

Poor pup! When a dog who is housebroken starts having accidents in the home, it can be a sign of a medical illness such as a UTI or bladder stones. I would take your girl into the vet for a physical exam, blood tests, and a urinalysis. The vet can diagnose if she does have a UTI or bladder stones, and can treat her for it.

This could be either due to a true urinary disease such as an infection or kidney problem, or it could be urinary incontinence which is common at this age. i recommend taking her to the vet for a urine analysis in order to get that checked and treated. i would not think that the excessive shedding is related to the urinary condition though.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! She may be leaking urine in her sleep from having urinary incontinence for example. Otherwise, other possibilities include a urinary tract infection, stones, among other possibilities. Her skin may be dry due to allergies for example. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing her allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

King's urinary symptoms could be due to a urinary tract infection, crystals in the urine, stones in the urinary tract, a mass, endocrine disease, or toxin ingestion. It is important that you have King seen by a veterinarian to help determine the cause of the signs and to start treatment. If you notice him straining to urinate/unable to produce urine, this is a medical emergency and can be life threatening, so he needs to be seen by a vet right away. Skin lesions can be caused by bacterial, parasitic or fungal infection, dietary or environmental allergies or sensitivities, immune system disorders, or a combination of the above. I recommend having King seen by your veterinarian to help determine the cause of the lesions you’ve noticed and to make sure they are treated appropriately. The vet will likely want to look at a sample from the area under the microscope to determine if there is an infection and to figure out what medication is appropriate for treatment. In the meantime, you can bathe King in hypoallergenic shampoo for dogs to clean the area, but this will likely not resolve the lesions.

The pink urine is probably related to a urinary tract infection/inflammation and should ideally checked as soon as possible (urine analysis and culture to give specific treatment). Shedding could be a systemic sign, secondary and vague sign of illness. If Oreo is doing it in the same spot and smells before doing it, I would say this is a training problem rather than a medical issue. If it was a medical issue, I would expect it would be in more random places. Try taking him out more often during the day, and after every meal. Stay with him outside until he goes. Now if this doesn't help the issue, he starts urinating all over the house, you see blood in his urine, and/or he becomes lethargic, then I would be concerned it is a medical issue. At that point, take him into the vet. Best of luck.

I'm wondering if Mugen is simply 'blowing his coat'. Basically the entire hair coat will shed out. Some dogs do this on a regular basis. Some only do it every once in a while. I would recommend to monitor him for any lesions on the skin, itching, bald patches and basically anything that looks like disease. Dogs will typically blow their coats for a couple weeks then it stops. If something seems questionable, head to the vet. Hope this helps!
