My dog has pink urine and sheds a lot but seems fine. What's wrong?

If this was a one time incident and there are no other symptoms to speak of (i.e. straining to urinate, increased urination or drinking), then I would continue to just monitor Shadow. However, if you are seeing other symptoms, then its best to have him checked to ensure there are no urinary issues such as urinary stones, a UTI, or urinary bladder masses. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). That may be due to a urinary tract infection/inflammation (UTI). Urine analysis and a check up would be needed to confirm or rule out this clinical suspicion and give appropriate treatment. The UTI could come from the bladder, urethra, urethers or even kidneys. It is unlikely to be related to the genital tract.

These signs might be compatible with a urinary tract infection/inflammation. Stress related (idiopathic type of inflammation), infections and presence of crystals are the most common causes of it. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed. Otherwise, other possibilities include a urinary tract infection, stones, among other possibilities. Her skin may be dry due to allergies for example. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing her allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

King's urinary symptoms could be due to a urinary tract infection, crystals in the urine, stones in the urinary tract, a mass, endocrine disease, or toxin ingestion. It is important that you have King seen by a veterinarian to help determine the cause of the signs and to start treatment. If you notice him straining to urinate/unable to produce urine, this is a medical emergency and can be life threatening, so he needs to be seen by a vet right away. Skin lesions can be caused by bacterial, parasitic or fungal infection, dietary or environmental allergies or sensitivities, immune system disorders, or a combination of the above. I recommend having King seen by your veterinarian to help determine the cause of the lesions you’ve noticed and to make sure they are treated appropriately. The vet will likely want to look at a sample from the area under the microscope to determine if there is an infection and to figure out what medication is appropriate for treatment. In the meantime, you can bathe King in hypoallergenic shampoo for dogs to clean the area, but this will likely not resolve the lesions.
