Why is my dog shaking, pooping blood, and collapsing? Kidney disease?

I'm sorry to hear your dog isn't doing well. No, this isn't normal - if he has been diagnosed with kidney failure then I recommend keeping him hospitalized and on IV fluids until his kidney values improve and he's feeling better and regains his appetite. Sometimes we can turn kidney failure cases around, and sometimes we can't - it really depends on their response to our therapy. Your vet may have not been open for the weekend and therefore had to discharge him Friday, but I recommend looking for the nearest 24 hour emergency vet location if he's still doing poorly, and then potentially transferring him back to your vet Monday morning.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Jackson and your other dog are cute!! There are MANY causes for vomiting, diarrhea and anorexia. Yes, there is concern for his kidney function because of his history as well as his age. Other causes are: viral or bacterial (even if your other dog doesn't have symptom), pancreatitis, toxin ingestion, ate something gross outside that isn't agreeing with him, food sensitivity. The blood on the stool indicated inflammation in the colon. I recommend that you consider having him seen today, which would have to be through an ER due to it being Labor Day. The Vet will at a minimum do blood work to check his liver and kidney functions they proceed from there. I hope this helps and I wish Jackson the best!

Blood work would help your vet (and you) figure out if the kidneys are functioning properly. Other tests such as for metabolic illnesses are also a good idea, as the symptoms described can also be attributed to this. It is best to get bloodwork and other tests like X-rays done so your vet can have a more complete picture of what is going on. If you don't think Sam is getting good treatment, or your vet is withholding test results, seeking a second opinion is a good idea.

Unfortunately there is no cure for chronic kidney disease (ckd), and there is no cure for heart disease. I am suspecting that Jumbo collapsed due to his heart problems. The symptoms of heart disease can be managed with medication, and your vet can discuss with you which ones are appropriate for him and his symptoms. With ckd, treatment depends on the severity of his symptoms. Again, your vet is the best person to discuss what treatments would be good for him, which may include IV fluids and a kidney diet. I wouldn't say that Angel's kidneys are negligible. They are still, though small than "average." This could be her normal (not all dogs will have organs of the average size, since a 10 pound dog will have smaller kidneys than a 100 pound dog). Other causes for small kidneys could be a congenital disorder, fibrosing or scarring of the kidneys, significant dehydration, among a few other things. Ultrasound still images can be very hard to interpret since you need to scan through things to be able to get the whole picture. From the still images, either they do not capture the actual kidney, or there is so much damage that they are not a normal appearance anymore. You can see a few different shapes, and the odd shapes seen in the pictures in the link are not seen on your images. Causes for loss of architecture (kidneys that are more or less mushed all together) can include infection, scarring, cancer, etc. Even though she is young, it is possible for Angel to be in kidney failure. Bloodwork and urinalysis would be the tests to show this. If she is in failure, then she would need dialysis to continue with life.

Hello, sorry to hear about Muffy. It sounds like she is suffering from side effects of the medications that she is on. However, she can also be having a small GI bleed/ulcer from her kidney disease. I would recommend that Muffy is re-evaluated by her veterinarian to make sure that she does not signs of a GI ulcer or bleeding. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Nyla. The diarrhea is unlikely related to her kidney disease. If it continues though, she will need to see her veterinarian. It will be easier for her to become dehydrated given her kidney disease. I hope this information helps!
